Used my 2007 Sportsman 500 Deluxe EFI to push snow last year. The plow is a Glacier II which is 48" wide. We had a lot of snow and the machine did fine except the 48" wide blade is very small and doesn't clear a very big path, especially when at an angle. I'm considering buying a wider blade and I'd like to know what you guys have and do you think the 500 could handle a 5 ft blade?

The 500 can push snow as much as any larger atv, The problems is at a certain lenght blade no ATV can push a plow throw snow before it just stops and spins,a 850 motor will not help with that problem. It s a loss of traction issue. If it does not work out with a wider blade you can always add chains to the tires and weight to the racks for more traction.

 

Go to purepolaris.com and check out the 60" RZR blade. I ran that last Winter and really liked it. Your ride should push it no problem especially if you add chains for more traction(or tracks which are spendy but totally rock in the snow).

I took a 48in. and ADDED 12in to each side of mine to make it 72in. I also added 30lbs of weight to the plow to keep it to the ground so it isn"t bouncing over the snow or ice, it works fine as long as I'v got the rear suspension lock on and the salt spreader for weight/traction, I live in southern ohio not sure how much snow yer pusshing at once??

 

I have a moose 50" and I really like it, but I do a lot of sidewalks and when it is at an angle I can make short work out of them.

 

TLC is absolutely correct... it's all about traction. With good traction, a 500 class ATV can handle 60" blade... within reason. That means you can't expect it to push 12" of wet snow with ease... or at all sometimes.

The best way to plow with an ATV is "with" the storm. Don't let it get ahead of you. If you can add some weight to the racks... that's good. If you can run chains... even better.
