I just bought my first polaris ,a 1997 500 sportsman and it sure beats the crap out of my honda.I have a service manual coming in the mail but I wanted to do some services like the rear gear box.I have read all the debates on lubes but I cant find anywhere on how much it holds.It smells like 80-90 weight in there now and its low so I want to drain it so I can start fresh with a service schedule.thanks for any info,and this is a great forum full of some good stuff.It want take me long to be a polaris guru but I gota start somewhere

 

Tranny takes 32 U.S oz from what my Clymer manual states. I use synthetic snowmobile chain oil but other say they use motor oil and ATF. We have a 97 SP500 also ,make sure you grease those u joints often, that year has no CV joints with boots.

 

welcome to the forum and condrads on your first sportsman. like mentioned and which already figured, do good maintaince for longer life and if you do alot of mudding regrease those joints to pushj out the water/mud.

part #1358 -Wix / 51358 NAPA oil filter and Mobil 1 sythetic saves $ on oil changes. I recomend using Polaris fluids for the tranny and hubs. Front differential is regular gear oil that you would put in an automobile. Do not forget to check the air filter.

 

Only use 0W-40 Synthetic oil in the motor. Make sure pull rope handle is sitting water tight over the recoil's rope hole. Lots of expensive parts inside the recoil that do not like to get wet.

 

thanks i will do all that.just got thru servicing it and only found a couple of bad parts that I might start a new thread for.it needs rear shock bushings but it looks like you have to buy new shocks and coil hat.I will try to get some mesurements and macgyver me up some new bushings.Also I need a rear hub due to excessive wobbling and it doesnt look servicable.2 tierods and some new pads and I should be in good shape
