Default 01 500 HO running rich...real rich!

My bud has a 500 HO 2001. He replaced the needle/seat, said it was bad. I thought it ran good before. I'm not sure but he said it had no adjustment for the needle?? Anyway...now it runs rough, have to hold the throttle down a little to keep it running...it will smoke ya right out of the shop...and it's a HUGE shop. Not burning any oil. My eyes are still burning! Choke seemed like it was operating OK.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Wenty

there is a lil metal tang on the end of the float assembly , for float height adjustment. 9/16" from top of float to gasket surface and the needle valve is spring loaded, so get this height with the float tang just touching the needle valve.
air screw setting is 2 5/8" out make sure carb is all the way in the intake boot, readjust cable slack for proper electronic throttle opertion.

if the float wasn't set right it should be flooding the bike allowing too much gas to fill the carb? did he do anything esle to the carb when he had it apart? if the choke wasn't seated right it would allow more gas to come in as well.

im assuming while he was in there, he cleaned all the jets and all that, make sure the main jet didn't actually come out, don't think it would be the choke, all that does is cut off air. and make sure ur float level is correct, parralel with the gasket surface when its upside down

No, the choke is just an enrichener, it wont move the butterfly Check to make sure it didnt fill the crankase up with gas cause of bad needle and seat, oil will smell like gas and be overfull if so change the oil and filter

Took the carb apart today...to be honest, I found no way to "adjust" the float height to "9/16" or level with the gasket surface?? I did bend the metal tab down a bit so it was just touching the needle, this is the only thing that looked even remotely "adjustable". I cleaned, inspected and reinstalled. Same thing...it'll smoke ya right out of the shop.

I'm fairly confident it's the float or needle, it's the only thing that makes sense to me. But...it's got me stumped.

you did say it ran fine before right. Can you simply switch out the needle and seat again to see if that took care of it. It would tell you if its the needle and seet or something else.

did u change the oil when u were done with the needle and seat, if thats bad it'll put gas in the crankcase and cause a lot of problems, way to check that is smell the dipstick on ur oil tank and see if ur oil level is high
