After reading a few posts and asking around, I changed my K&N filter on my 400 Scrambler 4x4 for a Uni filter that came with the RCR airbox mod kit. The K&N fits real nice, just like the stocker and you still use both inner and outer lids in the smae fashion, but when I put the Uni filter in, you can not use the inner lid, and have to rely on the filter being big enough to push against the inside of the outer lid. The fit was no where near as good as the K&N.

I was worried about dust gettig through the K&N, so swapped to the Uni. Now I am worried about dust getting AROUND the Uni filter.

Has anyone used the Uni filter in place of the K&N? Is the fit of the Uni OK?

I'm runnin' a UNI right now w/o problems, of course there's still snow everywhere you look........but on my TBlazer I used both lids and sprayed extra PJ1 filter oil around the top of the filter where it seats into the lid. I wondered if it would be OK because the stock rubber ring on the original filter seemed like a better setup, although I haven't had any probslems.

K&N's work well. Sure there are some who degrade it for some reason, but they work. I have one on every vehicle/bike/quad I own. In extreme dust/mud I use an outwerwear, but under normal conditions the outerwar is not needed since it reduces flow by about 15%. K&N is the only choice, to degrade it or not use is very foolish.

There is one thing about K&N's that should be said. You need to buy two of them. When you clean one, they absolutely cannot be force dried without harm. It takes about a day. Sure you can heat, or air gun them to death, but that's just it, it ruins the filter then. Buy two and change and clean as needed. You will have no regrets.

Thejoka,

The instructions that came with my RCR kit explained that you are to remove the inner lid. Mine fits great. I've seen a few posts in here about K&N or Uni and the majority seem to agree the Uni is better for atv's due to the better filtering. K&N makes a great filter, but it allows more dust to pass. That's why RCR includes the Uni with his kits. Which ever you choose to run, I believe they are the two best you can have.

Thanks all.

I think I will stick with the K&N as I prefer the way if fits, then use the outer filter from the Uni on really dusty summer rides. (Might shove the other part of the Uni in my helmet to filter MY air).

I have used both. I now use the Uni because it came with the RcR air box mod. I keep one in the quad, of course, and one in a ziplock baggie, oiled and ready to go. I like the Uni because it cleans up with mineral spirits, which is cheaper than the K&N cleaner, plus, you can use standard foam filter oil, which is also cheaper than K&N oil. It's not that I'm a penny pincher, but I've heard that the Uni filter does a better job, and it's one more for the plus side. The two I have still look brand new after dozens and dozens of washings.

I also use the UNI filters for my blaster, they are better then the stock filter and $10+ cheaper. The k&n's are nice, but for me Id just as soon throw my dirty filter away and buy a new one instead of trying to clean it, with the k&n thats really not a choice at $50 a wack... I am going to stick with the UNI's, for the price you cannot go wrong, also they seem like a pretty good design and are well made. As long as you oil it well I dont see much getting past it...
