82 200e Hot wire?
#1
Hi, I'm new here and was wondering if someone could answer a question. My dad gave me a 82 200e big red. It has sat with stable in it four almost five years when parked in a shed it ran. How ever he has lost the key to it. Now that he has given it to me I would like to just hot wire it. I would like to get it running for as cheap as possible. Just not sure the best way to go about this. I heard wire all the wires together somewhere, and to just un plug a wire from somewhere else. So which is it? Also I don't have a battery so just starting with pull start so only need the info on the ignition switch. Does it just ground out when off. If so then which wire do I unplug. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

So nobody on here can help me with this? If not does anyone know which forum I can go to were there is someone that knows. I'm sure I'm not the first person who has wanted to do this. Either because they lost key or broke it off. Or just because the switch it self is malfunctioning. This unit is almost 30 years old. My father gave it to me one because he has not riden it in almost five years and to clear up the space it was taking up in his garage for a new four Wheeler. He has owned it almost since bran new. He wanted nothing to do with it since he could not find the key. I would like to get it up and running the easiest and cheapest way possible. I'm thinking of running seafoam through it once I figure the wire thing out.

Well your right about the Honda dealer ship they built one a couple towns over and it only stayed open for a few months. The closest one now is atleast 75 miles away now. Driving a truck that only gets about 14mpg. It would cost way more than the key it self just to go there and back. I would do the locksmith thing but believe this when I tell you my wallet has a big goose egg in it. So free would be best. I really want to get this thing going in the next couple days.

I understand about the meny thing. But if you try to hot wire it, you may cause more problems that then have to be fixed. If the Honda place get you a key, have them mail it to you. If they can't, (may be obsolete), then I still think a locksmith can make one for pretty cheap. The cheapest would be if you took the switch off and took it to him. I bet under $10.

One reason you won't see an answer on hotwiring in here is because while it may help an actual owner, it helps anyone who isn't the tools to make what's yours, theirs.

I don't understand how I can cause more problems. A switch is just open or closed. So its either wire together and tape up or disconnect and tape up. Then I can just use the kill switch to turn off and on. I truely understand the reasoning behind not showing the answer on the sight so does anyone have or know where I can get a wiring diagram. So I can figure it out myself. Also remember under $10 is still more than $0 which is what I have at the presant.

You might check out ebay for a service manual. Just be aware that if it's on a disc, it's more than likely a copy from a manual. Might not be a big issue but I've seen some where the page is a little crooked. Others looked fine.
Also make sure they are selling the correct year and model. Have seen other brands they said covered all years (ltz 400) when in fact there were some significant changes to some areas of the quad.

Well that means money and time. I wanted to get this going today or tomorrow. If anyone knows how to do it or has done it in the past pm me so its not on the site. I thank everyone great information and advice. However I don't want to spend really more than gas money to ride this machine. I believe I have he original owners manual in glove compartment. I'm not sure if it has wiring diagrams, I will have to check pretty sure it doesn't.
