Default Ranger 500

I bought a trade in today from my dealer as a wee project for over the summer months.

It's a 2004 500 carb Ranger with over 1000 hours on it. If anyone could help with the following points I'd appreciate it.
  • If I go to the buggy when it is cold (the buggy) it will start first time and run no problem with throttle but will not idle. Once it is a little warm, it will only start after turning over for about 30 seconds with my foot to the floor.
  • The clutch is slipping at the top end of the drive, eg reaching the top of a hill whilst flat out on tarmac.
  • The park brake mechanism works fine and releases just does nothing to hold the buggy.
Other than that it is ok, for now.

I know there is a Ranger section but I was the last to post in it and that was 22nd of May. I'm assuming my problems could be the same for a bike. Is it more or less the same engine as in my 2010 500HO?

All the best

James

sounds like carb needs a good cleanin, , the pilot jet is pprobably plugged , thats why it wont idle, check and see if there is gas in the oil, sounds like its flooded when you have to hold it wide open to start, if there is it probably needs a new needle and seat in the carb , While your cleanin it, the secondary clutch buttons are worn out is why it wont climb the hill, should be an adjustment for park brake on rear axle or brake pads are worn out

First I would check out the carb, could need and needle valve replacement(Does it have black or bluish smoke?? OR seem to load up and die at idle?(1000 hrs quite a bit if carb hasn't been gone into) Plus I guess you've seen the idle **** under the carb(just checking) PLUS I would check the valve adjustment(.006 Intake and exhaust) at TDC
BOTH rear calipers have a mechanical adjustment for the parking brake: Jack up rear with tires off ground, there is an adjuster bolt and lock nut on the arm of the caliper, loosen lock nut and turn bolt in until you feel resistance on the tire as you are turning it,then back off 1/8 turn and tighten lock nut. Then try out parking brake to see if holds,IF not may have to adjust some more,PLUS make sure brake pads aren't worn thin!
Sounds like it needs a belt, plus could be wear on ramp buttons on rear clutch also? remove belt and while holding inner rear clutch sheath, turn the front part of the rear clutch,IF grinding noise is noticed then if needs to be looked into for sure, but still could have worn buttons any way?
This should get you started, OPT

Brilliant guys, thanks very much. I'll try and find time this weekend to have a look.

I've also got my nephew's Eton 90 to sort with a new ignition so he'll be pushing for that.

All the best

Do the side by sides have a ETC throttle switch like the ATVs? This could be the idle problem. Video: Polaris ATV Thumb Throttle Maintenance Tips | eHow.com

Carb or efi model Ranger? If carb model could could be weak fuel flow from the inline fuel pump. Just remove the fuel line from the carb and turn key on. Fuel should have a good flow. If flow is good, could be needing to have the carb cleaned, or could be as simple as replacing the spark plug and adjusting idle screw under the carb.If it's an efi model could be the map sensor harness wires on the air box tube may have a bare wire or short in the harness connector. Had plenty of these that would do this at the shop. Can make it hard to start and have an erratic idle, but would run good when above an idle. OPT
