H.O. came out in 2003, piston was different #,BUT if its any consolation the cams and valves are the same #'s from 2002-2011.
As far as the gear selector there are differences and different numbers,BUT may be can use the 96 but the mounting bracket will probably have to be changed/altered?? NOT entirely sure. BUT also if you're getting it for 900 bucks then $216 for a brand new shift box through Cycle Parts Warehouse may be a better way than trying to "southern engineer" a different year shift box that will in all probability won't last very long itself !! OPT

HO has 40mm carb instead of 32mm, a different cam, and the clutching is different IIRC.

HO was basically just a change on the cam on the 2001 models and up, piston change on the 2002-2011 models and going to the BST 40 carb up from the BST 34. Just gave it a little more power,BUT the BST 34 carb had far less problems on leaking, easier to change needle and seats and better float system(IMO),and didm't have the funky wrap under carb idle adjuster that always had the holder spring break!
