01 500 sportsman...front CV jt ?
#1
So I just did the CV joint on my 330 .. now my 500 has a wierd situation.
This is the observation.
On the 330, when the front CV was bad, when ya pushed or rode the quad it pulled significantly to the "bad" side due to high twisting resistance of the gummed up CV jt.
Now my 500 is doing the same thing but only in 4WD...hhhmmm?..in 2WD it pulls straight.
my query is...
1. is this normal?
and 2nd - is there a way to make these things greasable? I guess i could disassamble them occassionally but thats a bit of werk.
How many hours of use before a CV joint should be serviced? This one is a 2001 I'm thinking maybe 1000 hours...Thats a number from a bad memory so I can't be held to it....lol

Change your hub fluid first and see if it helps,if not then could be time to replace the armature plates and clean the hubs and bearings. Sounds like ones grabbing and the other sides not?? If only does it in awd and not in two wheel drive sounds like its hub related, not drive shaft related?? OPT

Thanks Old Tech,
Yer a wealth of knowledge !
I guess its time to get a manual for it..I can muddle my way thru most things but ...where is the hub oil...armatures...lol...sounds the electrical engagement device for the AWD...is that out in the hub (by the wheel) or in the more centrally located case somewhere.
Hubs and bearings...do ya mean the wheel bearings? I am sure I can do wheel bearings on most anything...Armature plates..are they visible in the hub as well?
I am sure I would see the elec. conn. going into it. Can ya test them or is it just easier/cheap enough to just replace'em?
Or is it a (dare I say) a dealer job ?

Mine did that, and changing the hub fluid fixed it. I change it twice a season now, it only takes 10 minutes. A Bottle can do about 10 changes so its cheap.
Here is a good link to hub maintance.

I liked the "switch the wires and see if the problem hub switches sides" that is so obvious but I am not sure how long it mighta taken me to think of it in the heat of werking on it. lol
Is there any other oil that can be substituted?
what is the scoop on the "Polaris Demand Drive oil"

I just use the Polaris hub oil but if you have no dealer around my Clymers Manual says you can use "Type F" Transmission fluid from a Auto parts store. Never tried it myself.

My local Polaris dealer told me "not" 2 use ATF in the hubs even though the Clymer manual says you can.
I had the same problem and noticed a leak under my bike and foundout I had a leaking hub seal which caused the pulling problem.
No hub oil will cause severe damage to everything!!!!

Type F was only called for on the old 87 and 88 Trailboss 4x4. In 1989 Polaris came out with their own "Demand Drive" fluid. A lot of people still used Type F up until the mid 90's! Clymer manuals NEVER have come up to the modern day on their manuals on a lot of things. In a pinch,I guess you could still use Type F. OPT

I ran ATF in my 99 Sportsmans hubs for 2 years without any problems so I'm not sure if my dealer was just pushing the Polaris oil to make another sale or not.
I agree with SOLOLUCKY ATF is "way" better than no oil at all and I wouldn't think twice about running it again.
