Default What type of oil, 2004 400

I'm borrowing a friends 2004 Arctic Cat 400 automatic, 4wd. I want to give it an oil change but am not familiar with the quad. Can I use motor oil? Regular 10-40 or 10-30? I live in SC.

I would ask your friend what he uses! If someone changed oil in one of my engines with out asking me first, they wouldn't get it again!

I have a friend that borrows my log splitter. To make it easy I keep a extra quart of oil with the splitter and tell them that is the only oil to put in it!

No problem! It's great that you are going to change the oil for him, but it would be a waste if he already serviced it.

He doesn't maintain his things. I borrowed it last year and bought a new choke lever, fuel shut off ****, throttle cable, changed the oil, adjusted the toe, and a few other things. He always likes when I borrow his stuff. lol

The oil will need to be "wet clutch" safe. Regular auto oil ususlly has friction inhibitors that are not goo on the AC wet clutch.

I have had good luck with Valvoline ATV/Motorcycle oil. It is a wet clutch safe dino oil that costs about $3.00 a quart. You will need 4 quarts of oil (actually will only use just over 3 with a filter change) and a filter.

IF you are just looking for something to do... I need the oil changed in my truck, some wood split, and the yard mowed. I have been spending "too much" time fishing according to my wife. I always answer with "I have not yet begun to fish!...honey"

Ok, I have asked him what kind of oil and he said he has never changed it. Someone else always does it. The manual says 10-30 or 10-40 but does not say whether it needs to be wet clutch safe.

use wet clutch safe oil. i just replaced my clutch shoes($150) b/c i didnt use it,well actually i had added seafoam which is NOT wet clutch safe. just use arctic cat oil,no question then. may spend a little more, but its the correct oil and you wont have to repair it later. when it comes to oil,ask yourself,Is it worth the extra $10 for the correct oil or to rebuild the engine??!!
