Default Kodiak battery not charging please help!

Hi guys,

I have a 2001 yahama kodiak 400 4x4 that is stock and the battery is not being charged. I read another forum that said to check the battery with a multimeter while its running and I only get about 12 volts. I heard it can be the regulator or the stator, my question is how can I check to see which one it is? Also would a bad one way bearing cause this?

Thanks

Randall

How old is your battery? Earlier this year my battery was dead so I charged it and was able to start it. I kept the charger on it for sometime, but battery would go dead quickly. The battery was the orginal that the atv came with and would start always even in winter months after sitting in a cold garage. I got 5 years out of the battery before replacing with a new one that cost $105. If you do decide to get a new battery, taking out the old one is kinda a PITA as it fits tightly in the compartment and dirt and stuff get in between the battery and compartment, making it difficult to pull up. I used two flat head screw drivers to get the battery out and some lube spray in between the voids to loosen it from the dirt that was caught in between the battery and compartment.

Also get dielectric grease and apply it to the terminals and other electrical areas. As far as battery life goes, I was told getting 5 years out of mine was very good and also a bonus. I also bought a trickler for $69 and installed the plug adapters right to my terminals on the new battery. A trickler is great to have cause it wont over charge the battery and once the battery is charged, it will shut down.

Now if your battery is new or not so old, I would suspect something is draining it, or it is not getting charged up when the engine is running.
