Default Polaris Scrambler Pull Start Messed Up

Hey I have a 1999 Polaris Scrambler 500 H0. I was out trail riding and i hit the throttle and then something started rattling. I found that it has something to do with the pull start. I pulled on the pull cord and some water or something else came out the hole where the pull cord is. I cord would not go back in. I started the bike back up and the cord went in, but it was rattled really bad so i turned it off. I took the drain plug out from the bottom of the pull start and nothing came out. How do I take the pull start off and look at it. Will oil from the engine come out if i take it off.

Any information appreciated. Need to get it fixed for this weekends big four wheeler run.

What probably came out was the small bolt holding the plastic reel in place OR could have been the ratchet (part that engages the flywheel if the reel broke). DON'T run engine until you repair the recoil as it can damage the stator if parts are flying around! Just remove the 8mm bolts around the recoil case and pull off(may have to tap it) inspect the damage and check the starter bendix and grease it while you have the cover off! If just the bolt came out,use blue loctite(medium strength) and reinstall the bolt and check recoil operation! Use a good silicone sealer around the cover when placing back on,plus a lot of people silicone under the handle to help keep water out! OPT

I got the pull start off and it was the small bolt that holds the reel in. It had come out. Does anyone have a diagram of how it is supposed to go back together. What is the starter bendix? What do I check for? Will multi purpose grease work and what parts do I grease. The fly wheel is pretty rusted should I do anything about that.

Thanks for the reply

Look up Cycle Parts Warehouse and you can find the recoil for your model OR maybe someone will post a diagram of it! The starter bendix is above the flywheel and twists out to engage the flywheel, just use any multi purpose grease around it. Clean the flywheel with electrical contact cleaner.DON'T use any carb cleaner or something strong! OPT
