My 14 year old kid is looking for a new ride. I've found a used 2000 Scrambler 400 for $3995. It looks to be in pretty good shape. How is this price and what things have you owners found that I should look for on this model. I would appreciate your help in making a decision.

The price certainly seems good, but how expirienced is your 14 yr old? That's alot quad.
As they say in one of the magazines, "it's easy to operate, but it's not for beginners."

Great quad! Check the lower steering bushing, tie rod ends and brake pads. Replace the pads with EBC or Boxbrakes. Check chain tension and thats about all I had to check on mine.

Good luck.

I agree with newfiebullet, it's a decent price but I have a 14 year old myself and I would be hesitant to turn him loose on my Scrambler. He rides it from time to time with no problems but it's a heavy quad and if it ever tipped on him there's no way he could hold it up. Plus that's a lot of power for a 14 year old. It does depend on your sons riding experience and size though.

My kid is not your average 14 year old. He is 6'1" tall and weighs about 170. He has rode my Artic Cat 500 and 300 and does just fine on both them machines. He is now wanting his own machine and is wanting something sportier than the AC's. Is there any routine problems with the Scramblers or have they proven to be reliable quads. I appreciate your responses.

It's a pretty good price I bought mine used from a dealer for $3900 with a full 6 month warranty from polaris. Great bike just look it over real good. Check the case by the front sprocket and make sure it isn't damaged. Sometimes if the chain is too tight it may snap and it hits against that case. Other than that just check for normal things like joints leaks steering and handle bars are a sure way to tell if and how hard it was rolled.

Good luck

Buy it!! I got a 2000 4x4 scrambler as our 1st family quad and my youngest 14 yr. old /170 lb son got introduced to quading with this machine. Since then we bought a 01 400 EX and although the boys can jet & jump around easier with the Honda, my 3 sons as well as myself have come to the conclusion that we would never give up the 4x4 and reverse as well as the long haul Cadillac ride that the Polaris offers. You can't beat it when it comes to snow and slop rides. You also have the option of getting more mod for the money with the 2 stroker compared to the 4 strokers. Its very user friendly for people that want to ride that have little or no quading experience. Steering stems are junk on all of them (Scramblers). $35 aftermarket fix. Hoping they come out with the rumored 700 Scrambler.
