I copied this off of another messgage board:
i went to my local yamaha dealer to find out when they would have a 2001 raptor in stock and he said late may. he also said the 2002 will be out a coulpe months after that and the info he gave me on them was that the 2002's were gonna be 6 speed. does anyone know anything about this? i would wait for a 2002 if this was true. any ifo would be great if anyone knows?
If this is true, what would be the current owners feelings? I, for one, would be highly disappointed that only after 3 years of developement and 1 year of production that Yamaha figured out that they could build a better tranny, no doubt one with closer spacing in 1st and 2nd gear. Also, that would be a fine way to repay the loyal Yamaha customers by causing the 2001 Raptors to become virtually worthless overnight. Maybe I'm just looking at it from a very biased viewpoint. Now then, did I hear something about a 450ex?

I agree. Although I think that the Raptor gear ratios suck, I would hate to see them re-design it so soon because I would want to get rid of mine and get a 6 speed.

It's actually one of the first things I commented on when I first rode the machine. It would also help the insane reverse gear as well.

For the guys that don't like the current 1st-2nd gear spacing, this would probably be taken care of with the 6 speed.
Still, gear spacing will never be perfect for all riders.
