atf in hubs
#1
hi guys,
i know that there is probably 1000 s of topics on this but i want to make sure. On 1996 older scrambler 400 with demand drive AWD can i use mobil 1 atf in the hubs? and to fill it you turn and fill the hub at 10 and 2 oclock position and fill until the fluid comes out the allen crew hole, correct?
I also dont have awd it just stopped working one day. The switch appears to be faulty, but Polaris dont make the switch anymore... Ebay or what other options are there. thanks in advance.

ATF if you don't care about the awd and just want to keep to keep it lubricated! ATF was used on early machines up until about 92 when it was replaced with demand drive hub fluid. It's been upgraded to Demand Drive Plus Hub fluid (whatever the upgrade it is if any, don't really know
) Are you sure it's the switch and not in the hubs itself? Plus fill at 12 o'clock, turn to 3 or 4 o'clock and drain excess(little extra won't hurt)! OPT

not sure... but the push button switch light does NOT turn on. And i will go with the slightly more expensive polaris fluid. I will look into seeing if their is voltage at the hubs themselves and go from there. hopefully it is something simple to fix.

You can check on some back posts on awd light not working, especially on this model! Some of the time it could be the gear position switch in the shifter assembly worn, shift assembly worn itself OR the switch itself has a small bulb that can burn out! It all has to work together to make the awd work! OPT

that is what i was worried about all those assemblies and such. Is there anything that could be wrong with the transmission and more complex items that could not make it work. This is 96 model year scrambler 400

If the transmission is ok,then you either have a problem in the shift box switch not making contact, worn shift box itself, the awd switch on the handlebars(light completes circuit!) bulb can just be burnt out, or if you can get power to the hubs just jack the front and rear of the atv up with tires off the ground, place in gear with awd button pushed in,crank it up and see if front wheels turn(could also have an internal hub problem). Transmission won't have anything to do with the awd. Only way it can affect it is if the chains were removed and it would just basically free wheel all the time! OPT

My manual says you can use ATF (Type F) but the Polaris bottle is cheap and refills the hubs quite a few times that I do not see the reason to try it.
Here is a good hub link that my help.
