Default school me on Clutch kits.

all i know is they replace some springs and some pulley looking thing and you pretty much have to have one if you run a decently sized tire.

how do they work?

also i need help finding one for a 96 sportsman 500 with EBS. i found a kit for a 96 sportsman 500 but its says w/o EBS so i'm guessing it makes a difference?

thanks
B

Look at You Tube on clutch operation and rebuilds, they have some good videos on these, plus a MANUAL for your machine will pay for itself several times over if you do your own work! EBS means engine breaking system, or EBC as it's correct name means engine braking clutch. Non EBS or non EBC doesn't have the internal one way braking clutch system. Look at Cycle Parts Warehouse under you model under Drive Clutch and Driven clutch and will show the breakdown, may help to show you the difference! You can also check Ebay,Highlifter, etc for kits if you're trying to modify the clutch. first thing is what are you trying to gain or offset? you mentioned tires so i'm guessing you are putting bigger tires on. the biggest gain most want is more bottom end to help over come the bigger, heavier tires. for the most put when you put a clutch kit in you gain some where and loose in others such as top speed while getting more low end grunt. the changes you make in your clutches are springs and weights(primary clutch) and you get a higher engagment on take off. you also for the most part want to get a kit for your year and model bike and it might make a differnce on whether it's an ebs or non ebs on the kit. there are serval differnt kits out there such as epi, heel clicker, and dalton as well as others i'm sure. some kits such as heel clicker are a tunable kit where you can actually change the set ups to do more of what you want.

If EBC is correct why would polaris put EBS on the side of their quads?
went to the cycle parts warehouse site and could not find a kit for a 1996 Polaris Sportsman 500 EBS.

highlifter doesnt even let me choose polaris after i put in the year.

i'm going to have big tires and from what i understand i have to have one. low end is king. i ride mud, mud, mud, deep water, and trails. but our trails are slow. at most i'd need to do 35-40 mph. average trail speed is about 5-10 mph.

found an EPI kit

The EBS didn't come out until 1998 model year! EBS describes the system as a whole,EBC describes the individual clutch. Don't sweat the small stuff! The Epi kit will work,it just change the counterweights, springs and helix to a more aggressive one! It describes the kit will fit the 1996 model which is a NON ebs clutch system! If you do have an EBS system on the 96 model, then someone updated the clutches OR you have at least a 1998 model? OPT

gotcha now.

well im just goin with what the guy told me. he said it was a 96 and sent me pictures and it said EBS right up under the seat on the side panel. maybe thats why i cant find an EBS clutch kit for a 96! bc they dont exist?! guess i'll have to check the sticker on the frame when i pick it up. where is it suppose to be? left front on the frame?

A lot of times they changed the old covers (Early ones had a bad habit of distorting and rubbing the clutches!) for the newer ones and may have put the "Auto Ebs" decal on it!(the original 96 one just said Auto Transmission! I have changed a bunch of covers and our parts man only stocked the EBS decals,so I used em ! Could be what happened? Have you even pulled the cover to look at the clutch system you have? There should be a model number(W969244) plus the vin# is etched on the left side frame behind the left front arm! Think they still had the 7 digit number. OPT

Then you have a least an 98 model! Think they have the number on the 98 model such as (W98CH50A********)the year model 98 and the 50 stands for 500 along with the rest of the serial number! Maybe wrong as to when this started,BUT the vin# is still on the left frame! OPT
