Hi all, I am new here and have just bought a 2008 Polaris Sportsman 800 Touring model. It seems to be in excellent condition but I have noticed something that isn't right.

I have several trailers to haul it in but also want to put it in the back of my 2009 Ford F150 "STYLESIDE" pickup. The opening at the tailgate between the rear fender supports is 49 inches so I figured it would fit. Specs. state that the 800 Touring is 48 inches wide.

After measuring I found out that the tires at the bottom have a width of 49 1/2 inches. Standing in front of the 4x4 you can see that the tires are tilting out at the bottom. If I pull up on a front corner, the tire tucks right in.

What is the cause and options for fixing this? Is one option better than another? And, is the fix, something I can do. I do well at fixing things but may not have the special tools if they are needed. Last but not least, about what would this cost?

The HD springs from Polaris should do the trick. They picked up my front end a couple inches and made the toe out less severe. The other thing that may be happening is that it may have aftermarket tires on it that are wider than the stock tires. When I went up to 26 " tires they were 1" wider than the stock tires meaning there was an extra 1/2" on each side of the quad. I also had to space out my rims from the hubs so it is now a tight fit between some of the gates on the trails I ride.

I have checked several locations and have a pretty good understanding of the problem now. I read the write-ups on adding the PVC spacer and changing out the springs would be done the same way. Haven't decided which way I want to go yet so I am just giving that some thought.

I think I would go with the EPI HD Springs if I decide to change springs.

either way you will gain your height back in the front and stiffen the front end to where it should be. for $100 +- you can put new heavy springs in. i was cheap and put the $5.00 spacers in instead.

 

Thanks for the replies everyone. Not sure which way I will go at this point but know my options. As long as I am careful, especially while going down hill and turning, I should be able to wait a little while. My un-heated garage is not the best place to do quality work right now. Won't be long before natures heater has the temperature about right though.

At my age I drive most of my toys either slow or slower

For that reason, a little time won't hurt.

I may haul it to Colorado Springs when I visit my brother and then I can use his heated garage. I can also be the Supervisor and Shop Forman there and at least have one good shade tree mechanic on site.
