New guy after some advice
#1
Hi all new to this site and just after sum advice. My mate has borrowed my quad and is out hunting and rang me yesterday to say that it has boiled over and the thermo wasnt coming on.They towed it back to camp and had a look for a fuse box but couldnt find anything. They have hard wired the fan and it works so just after sum advice on what you think it could be.I read sum other post and people are talking about ecm.How much are they and do you think that could be the problem. And would hard wiring it damage it at all.The quad is a sportsman 700 twin carburettor 05 model thankyou.

Welcome to the forum! If it's getting hot and the fan isn't kicking on (and you've checked that the fan motor is ok) best guess is the ecm module even if it's already been replaced under the recall bulletin. Have had a few of the replacement modules go out also as it's main function is charging back to the battery and also fan operation. Plus not a bad idea to make sure the radiator is clean front and back, and leave the radiator cap off to remove any trapped air. Even if you have the fan hooked up direct leave the cap off for several minutes to purge any trapped air. Then top off the coolant and replace the cap. OPT

Then you don't have an ECM module(just a regulator /rectifier mounted near the radiator) and the most problems on 2004 models when fans didn't kick on were the radiator sensors shorting out (part #4010161.) Plus make sure you bleed the cooling system of any air by leaving the radiator cap off (best if you jack up the front end) and let the fan cycle on and off a couple times to purge any air. On this system it takes a while to remove all the air because of the way the hoses are routed. If not, any trapped air will just cause it to boil over into the reservoir bottle. OPT

also on a side note. make sure the radiator is clean (no mud caked in the fins blocking air flow) on front and back as the polaris twins run hotter then the singles and even at a 25% blocked radiator it could make the engine over heat. just a thought. most likely a faulty sensor is not letting the fan come on when called for.
