90 Polaris sportsman hard start after warmed up
#1
Hey guys, I just bought a 90cc sportsman Polaris last week. Everything seems fine and looks great. I have noticed that after my son rides it and it's warm it is almost impossible to start at all if he shuts it off. It starts right up when cold no problem. I have to wait like a couple hours for it to start again. I guess after its cooled. Kind of acts like its flooded but he rides it normal and slow and then will shut it off and then won't start up again. Any ideas? Thanks

Welcome to the forum! Check compression when its cold and then after he gets it good and warm.If it has a pretty good drop then it could be time to freshen up the top end. If compression stays about the same then check tank vent line for any kinks that could cause a vapor lock. Plus not a bad idea to check the carb out. If all of this checks out ok then you might pull the plastic stator cover and blow out all accumulated dust and debris from the cover and stator area. Early model 2 stroke 50s and 90s were bad about stators going out from heat and water getting through the cover.

The tank vent hose is located in front of the filler cap(depending on what model you have) just make sure you trace it down(straighten any kinks) and just remove the filler cap and see if you can blow through the hose and can hear air hissing in the tank. Also on the carb top (at the back) should be a short hose with a red blocking plug. Make sure the hose isn't split! OPT

Funny you mention that short hose with the red plug. That was located in that spot and the red plug was hanging almost fell out of the hose. After a couple of attempts to reinser the plug the hose fell off. It is split on both ends so apparently it was just sitting there and was about to fall off. What is this hose line and plug an what is the purpose?

I will try tomorrow. It seems to run fine without it. Do you think it could be related to my restart issue when its warm? I know I sound dumb but exactly where was this tube and how hard is it to put on? I am comple;y dumb when it comes to this stuff.

Never really under stood the purpose of it myself! Think this carb was used on different applications since it is Korean and used on many different brand small atvs and is blocked off for Polaris applications. Wasn't deleted as part of the updated manual choke system kits that I installed on a few 90s,the manual chokes installed in the same opening where the electric choke is. The hose and plug still stayed on the carb! OPT

Ordered a new plug and hose. Not that I couldn't go to a local lawn mower shop and get one but hey, for $2 I got oem replacement. Guess I'll see what that will do. Again where was this tube located? And what is the snorkel looking tube on the left hand side of the atv that routes into the right side of the engine?

The carb cap has a small nipple toward the rear. This is where the short hose and red plug go. The snorkel tube on the left side is part of the air box. Another way to start a cold machine easier (if it's been sitting any length of time) is to use your thumb to block this tube off allowing more fuel into the engine for quicker cold starts. We even had in "info" bulletin from Polaris on this.Bulletin was especially for the electric choke models, but works just as well on the manual choke ones too so you wouldn't have to over use the starter, plus will kick start usually on the first kick.
