Question 86/87 Yamaha 225 moto 4

Need help. Recently installed new battery and it is fully charged. Now green neutral light will not come on. I can cross the post on the starter and it will crank and green neutral is very dim. Does anybody have a solution?

Did all this start after you installed the battery? Was it cranking with the old battery? How do you know the new battery is any good? I'm not sure about that model, but there should be a fuse somewhere, need to find that and check it 1st.

The old battery would not hold a charge. By crossing the solenoid post with a screwdriver the Yamaha will crank. When I rev the motor the neutral light dims. Could the solenoid be bad?

The solenoid would only be bad if when you hit the starter button, and 12 volts is applied to the 2 smaller terminals and the solenoid would not pass 12 volts from 1 large terminal to the next (you override that when you jump it with a screwdriver). But that should have nothing to do with your neutral lite. It almost sounds like your charging components are not working. You really need a volt/ohm meter and a manual to tell you how to check all of your electrical components, starting with your magneto, stator, regulator, cdi, etc.

If your other lights work but not your neutral lite, then you need to check your neutral switch. This is usually screwed into the engine somewhere around the gear shifter and has 1 wire going to it.
