REDUCED Yamaha yfz 450 Bill Balance (07)
This is not spam, I am about to buy the atv, did go and test drive it.
Have heard the engine tends to blow up, what you think? Is it a good deal?
Some have said the yfz is a time bomb.
There are a few things holding me back, he has not title in hand. He stated to provide a bill of sale. The atv was flipped over and the rear bar is missing including the brake light.
He retouched some of the parts with spray paint, which I did not like and seems as if hiding something. I test drove it and for me to drive it straight I had to position the handlebar a little off to the left side. He said , was not big deal, put it in his garage and adjusted one of the rods. The handlebar had some play, and turned out to be a loose mainshaft sterring bolt. it did crank up on the first try, without using choke at all, the fan would come on and cycle like suppose to.
The atv shifts like butter, extremely progressive power all across the powerband, I had to lean over the gas tank and that thing wanted to lift up the front tires. The atv is very light, one can lift up from the front without any problems. it has its little things here and there, but have heard that the yfz, tends to have oil circulation problems and tend to blow up engines, throw out rods, etc.

Time bomb? Nonsense. They will last as long as any quad as long as they are taken care of and not abused. There is an oil mod everyone talks about. Yamaha had a flaw where the under side of the piston would not be oil'd properly. I believe '07 and up the problem was resolved.
From what your describing sounds like the quad may have been wrecked. No big deal. Most 450's have been. Just watch for cracks in the frame. That's what you want to watch for. Front ends can be fixed. I'd get that rear light fixed and put a grab bar back on there. That bar is a necessity for moving it around and the light will be required for some parks.

$2500 would be a great deal in my area for an '07. I wouldn't be too concerned about the title, just make sure you get a bill of sale and make sure the vin # matches the bill of sale, and that they sign it. You could also check the vin # with the local police dept to make sure it's not stolen.
I have probably said the 450's are time bombs before, but if cared for properly they can last forever. They can rev so high that it would be wise to replace the piston rings more often than some other quads (yearly would probably be OK for a trail machine depending on how often you ride). If you replace the rings before they go bad (blown engine!), it could save your nikasil coating on the cylinder walls so all you would have to buy each time is a set of rings and a gasket kit, verses a $200 piston plus a $400 bore and re-nikasil job.

Like Koopa said the oiling problem was fixed, I was thinking it was done on the 06 and up but maybe the 07 and up. I know the 05 had the issue.
2500 in my area is a good deal. With him stating that it had been rolled I would almost bet either the steering stem or the handlebars are bent, possibly both.
As for the title I would check your local laws. Some states require a title some don't. If you are in a state that requires titles then he may have a lein on it, if that is the case you will not be able to get title on it until that lein is paid off and some riding areas require insurance and registration to ride. If you are in a state that does not require a title he may have never applied for one.
If the ATV does have a lein and the finance company is holding the title even with a signed bill of sale you won't be able to get a title for it until that lein is paid off by either you or the seller.

Good advice on checking for a lien holder.
Also, some states that require stickers to ride also will want the title to issue the sticker. Some don't, so it's best to check that out ahead of time if you do purchase the quad and want to take it out of state.
I'm guessing when they say flipped over, they meant they flipped it on it's backside by the damage described. Just in case it made it belly up, take a look at the steering stem too.

Good advice, I would never thought about it, only if it were a vehicle. This thing about titles, permits is new to me for atvs.
Cant I go back to the seller for getting my money back? Wouldnt that be illegal to sell without title and having a lein.
To check the lein all I got to do is double check the VIN at the DMV aka "tax collector"? Or do I check with Yamaha...

You would need to check with the DMV, yamaha wouldn't have that information. If it was bought through yamaha finance it wouldn't have a lien because these are basically a credit card that is underwritten by a 3rd party financial institution like Chase, Bank of America, etc.
Yes, it would be illegal for him to sell it if there is a lein but you getting your money back would require you taking him to small claims court if he does not voluntarilly refund your money and for something like this it simply is not worth it when you can find out yourself with a little bit of homework.
I would check with your state and find out if they require ATV's to be titled and I would also check with the DMV if there are any liens on it.

And I just recently purchased my first atv, a 2007 400ex, and I outgrew it within a month. In fact when I bought the 400ex I did not even test drove it as I did not know how to drive with clutch. The guy drove it, I saw it rode well, and bought it.
Now I want more power, I saw this beauty, my wife is gonna kill me. I was able to drive the YFZ in front of his house and it was scary when the revs started creeping. Had to lean over the gas tank as I could feel the front tires lifting up. I live nearby some powerlines, with very clean trails, and just want it to punch it through the open land. I do not want to race, but want to be able to rip the turns, and launch it out of turns with power on demand. The 400ex is a solid atv, but seems way too heavy for technical trails, and seems to struggle out of turns.
I can put the 400 for sale, but by then the other one will be sold. I am willing to take a loss as I know it will be a while to find another yfz as clean as this one. I even checked the brake pads and were spanking brand new. The owner had an accident and it just sat on storage until he finally recovered and found the energy to clean out all the gum and make it run smoothly again.
Update: I got the VIN so tomorrow check with the DMV...
