Default scrambler 500 no spark!! help

hey guys just picked up a 97 polaris scrambler 500. When i turn it on the headlights turn on but i dont get any spark while cranking.
I do not know how to test the stator but would like to before pulling it out as well as the coil and anything else i can test. I dont really know too much about electrical so any feedback would help. thanks where do i start??

Try the cheap stuff first. Like cleaning the pluse/pick up coil face and flywheel contact points of rust ,then check the coil . After that its the stator since they are know to go more offter then a CDI.

Here is a good video to watch, its a 2003 Sportsman but it has the exsact same motor as your 97 Scrambler.

Mine had a weak spark and just cleaning the pick up coil and flywheel fixed it.

Good video, but he doesn't give the resistance specs on the stator or coil even though he's got the manual in front of him! The stator pulse coil wires leading to the cdi (white to white/red) should be 97 ohms + or- 20%. The stator exciter wires leading to the cdi(Blk/Red to Green) should be around 446 ohms resistance + or - 20%. The coil primary(coil tab to ground) .3 ohms. Coil secondary (coil tab to plug wire, cap removed) 6.3k ohms. If you still don't have spark after cleaning the pulse coil use a meter to check these resistance values on your 97 model. Hope cleaning the stator and pulse coil solves the problem. OPT

I have a few questions , first is where do I put the red and where do I put the black leads of the multi meter to get these readings. I would like to test the coil, stator, and csi too. The wiring board confuses the he'll out of me on it's own and this bike has a kill switch wired in instead of a key. Also I am not familiar with the pulse coil, where and what is this. Please let me know thanks.

On the stator pulse and exciter coils it doesn't matter on test lead position. On the ignition coil you always have the red lead of the tester on the coil tab( where the blue/white wire from the cdi goes to,but pull this wire off the coil to test) Manual doesn't have a test on the cdi, says to replace 'with a known good one" to test ignition!. These tests are not always 100% accurate, but pretty close. If the stator exciter coil, pulse coil and ignition coil ohm out ok,then you can narrow down the problem to possibly the cdi. Hope this helps. OPT

ok so i id the tests and got good readings for the pick up coil but all of the other wire had no readings at all. wierd. so then i pulled it all apart and discovered that there was no stator in the bike at all! and the flywheel magnets were just about shot! so i ordered a new stator and put the flywheel back on to see if it wold have spark and still nothing. i cant find a lwheel for this bike its a ff97 flywheel. i tried an ff 95 flywheel and it doesnt fit. the only ff 97 flywheels are about $340 and im not spending that. is it possible to ut a ff95 flywheel with a newer moel year stator on he bike or no? please let me know asap thnks

Problem is that the flywheels were change to enclosed magnets instead of the epoxied in magnets that would break apart and tear up stators, like yours has already done! They're expensive, but if you do find an old flywheel you could have the same thing happen. You can try Ebay, salvage yards, etc if you don't want to fork over $300 for a new one. OPT

If you replace the stator and the pickup coil is in good shape(ohmed out ok as you said) you should have spark whether it's the old style or new style flywheel. But since you purchased it in a non running condition and the stator itself was actually missing from behind the flywheel, other things could be wrong such as a cdi, coil problem, etc that the previous owner may have had. You just have to take a chance! OPT
