Sportsman brake service??
#1
Will be doing a brake service on my 400HO, just turned a year old this week.
Anything special I need to do? Is it like doing the all wheel discs on my 04 GMC Sierra? Clean and lube slider pins?
Thanks in advance.

Pads already? Here's a video on pad replacement. All year models are basically the same. You can always slide the caliper bracket off and grease the slides if needed after the pads are off. Screw driver help on prying pads off and on.Plus the video doesn't show how to adjust the small set screw properly. When all back together, brakes are pumped back up,turn the set screw in while turning the rotor. Once you feel a slight drag on the rotor, back off the set screw 1/4 turn. This adjusts the main pad that engages the rotor and helps align the caliper properly.

Thanks OPT. I don't need pads, just want to check them out, get a little squeal once in a while.
Can I use the same synthetic brake grease that Iuse on my truck?
Got my first big trip Canada Day weekend, want the bike tip top for then.
Or need I bother, I do not ride mud.

Squealing is usually from dirt, rust on the steel rotors or pads. You can just clean em up with a general brake cleaner spray, plus a 3M pad or a fine wire brush wheel on a drill on the rotors should help break any glaze that could contribute to the noise..

I've never done brakes before and I'm getting ready to put new pads on my '12 Sportsman 550. I watched the video you provided in this thread, but I was wondering if you could describe where the set screw is located. You mentioned the video didn't talk about how to adjust the set screw and I wanted to make sure I get this right.

You have to take the set screw out located on one end of the caliper slide to be able to press the slide back far enough to pry one end of the pad off. Then you can pry the other end off. Same for the other pad. Once the caliper is mounted back on with new pads install the set screw back in,pump the brakes up. Slowly turn the rotor and turn the screw inwards. Once you feel a slight drag on the rotor back off about 1/8 turn. This adjusts the main pad, plus helps align the caliper to the rotor.
