Question '87 Trail Boss Problems-Need Help!

I bought a 1987 Polaris Trail Boss a couple of years ago and it ran like new. Over a little bit of time the thing stopped running. It sat there for a year or so and I have finally got around to fixing it. I have just fixed the problem where too much gas overflows out the carb and got it running for a bit. Now a new problem has come up. When I try to start the thing it takes at least 20-30 pulls to even get it to fire (I have a bad battery.) This gets to be a little tiring. I don't want to spend the money on a battery, but I will if its a must I could buy it. The thing also misfires sometimes, does it need a new spark plug? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advanced.

I'd do a compression check before I did anything else! This can tell you a lot right there. If the compression is below 120 psi could be why it takes so long to start. If compression is at least this amount,it could be carb related, needing a new carb kit if you haven't at least replaced the needle and seat. Plus leaking crank seals even with a good top end compression reading can cause problems.

Thanks for the help. I'll try changing the needle and seat and check the compression. Hopefully it starts up faster!
