Default K&N air filter questions?

What is the opinion on a K &N air filter vs the stock paper filter?

http://www.knfilters.ca/mobile/mProduct.aspx?prod=PL-1003

Should I run a pre filter?

Will I need to rejet? 2012 Sportsman 400HO.

Thanks,

Will

My opinion, not very good, but I've seen the ones without filter socks and neglected for the most part and the damage they can do . Others love em,but same as any filter,it has to be kept clean and oiled. My I'd rather use an Uni foam filter. It may clog up with mud and dirt, but won't let small particles pass into the engine.Air filters are almost as touchy a subject as oil preference for some folks...

Thanks OPT. I am at just over a year, about time for a new OEM filter. Not an overly agressive rider. Should I stay paper, or go Uni?

Uni has an advantage if you like peddles, right?

Not really a fan of the Uni foam filter though.

I always ran k&n filters w/sock on my sportsmans without any issues. The uni is good too. If you are just hitting puddles and not going deep the paper filter w/sock will be more than adequate.

Sometimes you can blow dust out of the paper filter and still use it but if you try that with a K&N it will blow a hole in it. At least that's what I was told. When it need s to be cleaned you need a bowl full of cleaner to take care of it.

You spray with cleaner, let sit, and rinse with water. That is what I like about them over the uni.

I like the OEM paper filters. I don't think any other type of filter filters as well as a paper filter. After 300+ miles at an extremely dusty Taylor Park this summer I pulled my filter and shined a light down the intake tube. It was spotless. Can't get any better than that. $20 once or twice a year for a new filter is well worth it for that kind of performance.

Ditto on that, plus ready to ride the next day (Sunday) where most/all dealers are closed. IMO, the Pre-Charger (sock) is mandatory for the K&N filter to be effective, as is the oiling of the filter.

No, you do not oil the sock.
