Default 2003 foreman 450 es shifting problem

Hello, My name is James and I from Middle Tn., I want to thank you for allowing me to be a apart of your site and your forum discussions.
QUESTION:
I am having a problem with my 450 ES TRAXLOK . It will not shift out of first gear. But it will shift from N to 1 and to reverse.
The code I am getting is ( the "N" flashes 3 times and then pauses and then 3 times. This happens continuously.
Does anyone know what this code means?
Thank You in advance for any help you can give me.
James,

This worked on my 2000 Foreman 450ES. It would some times not shift up or down.

I would remove the fuses from under the seat and reinstall them and it would shift once again .
It seemed like something would just reset itself. Worth a try

Well the code showed a bad angle sensor. So I put a angle sensor on it and it did not help. I checked all the grounds and nothing there either. I removed all the fuses and also reset the switch with the ecu. Did not help either.
I am still plugging along . Next thing is to remove the trans cover and take a look inside.
Does anyone have any ideas before I rip into this??
Thank You in advance.
GB, James

Have you checked the shift motor ? apply 12 volts and it should spin one direction, reverse the polarity and it should spin the opposite direction. You can put a volt meter on the connector without removing the motor to insure that voltage is going to the shift motor when you reset the system. System reset should provide a short pulse of voltage to shift motor. You can also by pass the ELECTRONIC SHIFT UNIT and shift the transmission (electrically) manually by disconnecting the shift motor voltage feed wires and installing a DOUBLE POLE DOUBLE THROW MOMENTARY SWITCH (feed this power thru a 30 amp fuse). Mount this on the handle bar next to your thumb and shift the trans as you would in the electronic manual shift mode using the ARROW shift buttons. Downshift will sometimes jump down 2 gears when downshifting however when you use this method. Since the ECU is in the limp mode you will not get a gear readout.

If all else fails.
Use the "advance" search feature on this site, there are many good E.S fix posts over the years especially from a member called "HondaMechanic" put his name in the author part in the search page.
One of those post has to fix your problem because there are so many of them.

I find the search feature very handy and easy to use, since many people had the same problem and you get so many more solutions.

Default Here is how to check your ECU for 2 areas of issue

To check the ECU shift motor control circuit from the ECU to the shift motor disconnect the shift motor from the ECU. Put a OHM meter on the wires coming from the ECU to the shift motor and check the resistance in that portion of the circuit and it should be 1.2k to 1.9k. IF no continuity or fully closed .... check from the pins on the ECU, if open/or no resistance then the ECU is bad. You can check the shift motor by disconnecting it from the circuit and putting12 volts to it and it shoud spin extremely fast in one direction, reverse the polarity and it should spin fast in the opposite direction.

Default Thank You

Bypass Kid: Thank You for the info. The Motor is shifting to 1st and Reverse. But will not go any further up into the gears. It will not even shift with the manual shifter. It is something in the tranny.
But thank you very much for your input. I did test the motor like you recommended. Thank You!!
This is a great site because of everyone helping one another. When I get it fixed I will post what was wrong.
Right now I am trying to remove the crankshaft bolt from behind the pull cord housing. Way to Tight!!
It is a normal, right handed thread isn't it?

What was the outcome of this machine. Was it some sort of electrical problem?
