Default 89 Yamaha Moto 4 350 Project

I have a old 89 Yamaha Moto 4 350 that was given to me a while back. Decided to fix it up a little to ride around and what not. Ok first thing whoever had it before me did not take care of it. It had no key just a toggle switch no battery no spot for a battery no tires. Would pull start every time. Well I some tires, bought a key off ebay, bought the battery holster and got a battery. Well I had to replace the neutral switch because it was broken. Now I got the key hooked up and the neutral switch hooked up but now when I go to hook my battery cables up the ground wire sparks and starts to smoke. But the motor tries to start. I'm not sure if my start button is sticking, or maybe I need a new starter motor, some people told me those 2 things. also I changed the 30 amp main fuse. I just don't know what to do?
