2000 Magnum 500 brake system dead!?
#1
I recently took my quad in for routine fluid changes & then got a call saying the front pads were in need of replacing. I said go for it. Up to this point front & rear brakes were working fine with no signs of any problems. I get another call the next day telling me my front right caliper was locked up, but he was able to get it off & working properly but it need to be replaced. Again, I havent noticed any indications of any problems before dropping it off....it would stop on a dime. Fast forward a week. I get the call to come pick it up. I notice on the the first ride that the brakes are not working as efficiently as they used too & that the brake fluid in the master cylinder is below the low line. I immediately return to the shop & inform them of the problem. I tell them do whatever you gotta do, find it, whatever.....just fix it! At this point front & rear brakes were working properly, just not as effectively as before & fluid was low. Fast forward a week. I get the call to come in & talk about it. I'm then informed that my system is completely shot. I will need new front & rear calipers, rotors, pads, lines & master cylinder. $1300+ just in parts by their calculations. At this point the front brake handle has zero pressure and doesn't work at all. The rear peddle has minimal pressure & functions, but not to the point of slowing or stopping the bike. At this point I'm livid, & feeling screwed over. Later that day, after putting around the hunting land I noticed the hand brake had gone from having no pressure & moving back & forth freely, to being in its correct position & unmovable. I'm not sure if that has any relevance, but there it is. What can I do to fix this? Any advice is greatly appreciated & thank you in advance!

Think you need to find a new shop or learn how to repair items yourself! Calipers can be rebuilt fairly easy, rotors if really bad or warped need to be replaced, but this $1300 price for just the parts quoted is ridiculous!!The only brake lines I ever replaced were ones in accidents!! Caliper rebuilt kits are about 25 bucks each, brake pads are cheap on Ebay. Here's a pdf service manual.Doesn't matter on the year model as the brakes are identical on these 98 model machines.Even if it needs a new master cylinder,Ebay OR Cycle Parts Warehouse is cheaper than the dealers.Your choice as to do this or have it done, but I'd remove it from that shop!Index of /ORV Manuals/Polaris/1996-1998 - All Models

I apologize for the double post. I have always done the maintenance myself, but just haven't had the time. Does this problem sound like a rebuild kit & a master cylinder is in order or do I just try bleeding the lines or what? Thanks for the manual download!

A lot of the time a simple front and rear pad replacement if needed(around 60 bucks or less) can solve the problem.Helps to have a Mityvac type brake bleeder that you can get cheap at Harbor Freight, etc on removing the air from the system. Look at the manual link I posted on brake pad replacement, plus you can do a general search at the top of this page, it will show several posts on how to do this.Master cylinder around $135 at Cycle Parts Warehouse if needed. If the front rotors are bad,37 bucks each. Caliper piston kits are about 30 bucks each. "IF" it needed all of the above which I doubt, the total parts would be around $360. Quite a long way from the $1300 you were quoted just on parts!!That's why I said get your machine away from this place!!http://www.mfgsupply.com/atv/atvbrak...brakespol.html
