Just down load this manual as the 250 engine is the same over the years on all models. Index of /ORV Manuals/Polaris/1996-1998 - All Models

The problem I'm having is the bushing is sitting flush with the top of the hole that the pump goes in and was wondering if its supposed to be that high or further down in the motor I've looked thru the manual when I was at my local Polaris shop and from what I've seen in it it looks like it should be lower than it is, again thanks for any info

Look on page 320 of the manual. Shows the clearance between the bushing and pump boss and how to measure for the shims. But to basically answer your question, the pump bushing is recessed a little in the engine case.

Ok thanks again guess the next question is if the bushing isn't recessed in the engine case how do you get it back seated in the engine case where it should be

Ok looked at the manual and understand the measuring for the gap but right now I have no gap when I place the pump up to the mounting flange there's a 1/4" gap between the pump flange and the engine flange so right now I need no spacers

Then sounds like you either don't have the pump shaft fully inserted all the way into the case or the bushing itself isn't bottoming out on the shaft.

Ok one last question and ill stop bugging the bushing is it supposed to be movable but snug in the case or really tight and not be able to move what so ever

Then it's probably the o-ring binding against the case wall. Oil this bushing up and it's more manageable.
