GPS Speed results of a DS and Raptor
#1
The GPS: Garmin Etrex
The Quads:
2000 DS 650 -- 100% stock -- Rider-- about 180 or less.
2001 660R -- Mods listed below -- Rider -- 225
GYT-R bumper, GYT-R a-arm guards, GYT-R frame skid, GYT-R heel guards, PRM swing-arm guard, Douglas .190s, Renthal bars, and the killer (in speed test), 23" front and 22" rear Holeshot XCT 6-plys. When I put the heavy tires on, I could tell a big difference in the speed. It sapped some power, so I regeared. I went from a 13/40 gear combo to a 12/43, so you know I'm geared way down.
The results: DS 73.9 (rev limited) Raptor 71.6
The conclusion: Both quads are really tough for factory machines. The DS could be faster if geared up and so could the Raptor if I hadn't added all the extra weight and geared it down. With my tires and gearing, I'm almost geared as low as one with stock tires and a 12 tooth front.
Even with all the extra junk on mine, I still have enough acceleration to pull the front wheels up (and over if I desired)while at a good pace in 3rd gear.
Both quads have stock motors and pipes. I'm pretty pleased considering it all.

That sounds like an acurate reading. A while back I posted mine and it was 74.1 mph with stock gearing and a full Big Gun exhaust. Now I'm just waiting for the flocks to come in and grip at us because theirs run 81 mph stock with a 382 pound rider while going uphill through the snow with one flat tire.

Good info...I would be interested to know how the race unfolded...outta the hole...2nd-3rd-4th gear acceleration comparism.
Am I the only one around that thinks, in general, these new quads should be hitting 80+ mph?

It is not the actual top speed that matters, but the power it takes to produce those numbers is. A vette has a 180 mph spedo on it but the national speed limit is still 65 in most states, do you need to go that fast?of course not. But you would be disappointed if your 46k Vette only went as fast as a 4-banger s-10 because you dont NEED to go 180. Yeah the Raptor is fast enough, but consider this, most 600cc sportbikes produce close to 100hp. And they dont cost but about 1k more than a Raptor, and they have superior brakes and many other perks that make the price justifiable. And I dont know your elevation, rider weight ect, but if you are only getting 70mph out of your stock Raptor then something is wrong. I dont want to start anything over this again, but i have yet to see a stock Raptor run anything LESS than 73 mph. And that is at a dragstrip, not some"I stuck my GPS in my pocket and tore down the local street BS"
