Default Tire width questions?

Curious as to why the rears are wider than the fronts? Would running 4 equal width tires do any harm? Rather than 8/12 fronts and 10/12 rears, could I run 4@ 9/12?

Thanks. The rears are listed as a 10/12, but really measure 9.1". Gonna swap a rear on the front, see if I will need spacers. Slowly saving for reptile radisls, 26 9 12.

I was just thinking that, if I need spacers, why not go 10's all around.

Curious as to why the rears are wider than the fronts?
Few reasons , Thinner means lighter so it has easier steering.
Thinner do not push as much snow and mud and break a path for the wider rear tires.
The rear drive train is more heavy duty constructed then the front diff and axles so it can handle turning heavier wider tires.

Thanks. I may go with 26/9/12 on all 4 corners. My rears only measure out to 9/12 anyway.
