Default `02 Sportsman 500 charging parts

Was out plowing last night and battery went dead/winch quit. Checked today and no charge output. Runs at 12.0 volts even when revved up. Is this legit for a regulator?http://www.ebay.com/itm/Voltage-Regulator-Rectifier-Polaris-Ranger-500-6x6-1998-1999-2000-2001-2002-2003-/350921857972?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item51b4929bb4&vxp=mtr
Specs I`ve found so far state stator should ohm out at .13 ohms. Y/R to R wire. Where is the best part source? Ebay is convenient but I want good parts. Are regulators problematic as the vendor states?

Polaris # on your model is #4060173. The one you found might work, but I'd call to see what Polaris #'s it crosses over to. A lot of ones on ebay, etc may not fit. Here's another place as an option.
Polaris ATV Rectifier Regulator
Common problem on regulators shorting out, plus make sure the wires are connected properly as some models have the habit of disconnecting from vibration. Charging rate should be between 14-14.5 volts on average.

Default 14.5 volts it is!

Got it stuck in the snow sunday and had to remove the plow, get out, and come back and drag the plow out. In the process the snow pushing up in there probably pulled the r/y wire out. Thanks to OPT mentioning the wires coming undone, and giving me incentive to looking under there, I was able to locate and plug them back in. Cheap fix. OPT rules. Thanks much.

Wish everything was a cheap fix like this..Found plenty of them unhooked that came into the shop for charging problems. Usually the red wire was the main culprit. Might be a good idea to run a little tape around the connectors as I ended up doing. Then you wont have to worry about snow piling up or vibration pulling the wires loose again.

Good idea. Will do that when it warms up. What I learned from this was how long that little battery will crank the engine and work the winch. I just have a 100ft. driveway and push the snow out on the road and back on my side. I worked the winch quite a bit before draining the battery. We had about a foot of snow here. Now I`m confident of plowing my neighbor out and not getting stuck over there with a dead battery.

Load test your battery first if in doubt. If it's a new battery or checks out okay, then could be either a stator or regulator as 13 volts is not enough. You can check yellow wires to each other that go to the regulator from the stator with a meter.None should short out to each other or to ground. If the yellow wires are okay, stator should be good and regulator may be at fault. For more detailed checks here's a pdf manual that shows charging resistance checks on the wiring schematic page for your model.http://gh-ftp.com/ORV%20Manuals/Pola...0%20-%20SM.pdf

well the battery is good and when I run the machine at idol it charges 12.34 volts but when I rev the motor it goes up to 14.35 volts so do you think its the voltage reg

Nope, its just starting to charge once you get past an idle. A lot of the older machines do this. Newer dci machines have a better ignition and charging system and charge 14 volts or more at an idle. Just don't let it idle a lot especially with any accessories such as lights, winch etc operating. Once you get the rpms up, the stator sends input to the regulator/rectifier and it starts charging enough to keep the battery up.

when I put the stator yellow wires on my ohm meter it zeros out but not when I go from yellow to gound also it always charged 13 volts at idol before
