Are there any upgrades to the bike that u know of?Most of the 400exs I've been on have a tick but mine has a stage 2 hot cam the the valve adjustment requires cause a much louder valve tick.

More than likely your valves need adjusting. I've never been around a 400 that didn't tick, my new 2013 started making valve noises a month after I got it even. Perfectly normal for these quads, but if it gets real loud you need to have them adjusted as soon as possible.

does it sound like its coming from the oil resivior? If so, check the oil, if its dirty change it and see if you have sparkles. On my 400, it would start doing a grinding type noise after a few hours on the ice. Turns out my skid plate was holding ice up and it was covering my oil line! took it in and they said it was because the oil pump was working harder to circulate the oil and it would grind a bit. They just told me to use a more extreme cold type of oil and spray de-icer on it when i noticed any build up and that solved it.

All 400ex's have a top end tick.
It is normal for those quads.

Ticking in the motor almost always means rattling valves. Just take it in to a good mechanic or dealership if it is under warranty and tell them you think you need a valve adjustment. Should cost less than a hundred dollars.
