Default polaris magnum 425 issues

Hey there, have a 1997 Polaris magnum 425 I got for a good price has a few issues I've been working on it cleans carb. And what not then I go to ride the bike and it won't get over 25mph and the bike sounds like its rapped out and backfires when I let off it

Don't just clean a carb, rebuild it! 9 times out of 10 you'd have to go back and tear it apart again.http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-SHINDY-CARBURETOR-CARB-REBUILD-REPAIR-KIT-FOR-POLARIS-425-MAGNUM-1995-98-/290892668459?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43ba8dde2b&vxp=mtrCould be a simple as a reverse limiter shorting out causing the problem. Just pull the black wire from the module located in front of the cdi, under the front panel. Item #16 on the parts breakdown. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse If that doesn't help then could be an exhaust lobe on the cam worn down. That was a common problem on the 425 and early 500 engines. That would usually cause a fair idle, but either bad top end or when worn down completely would only idle and back fire under throttle. Most of them looked like this members cam on his Scrambler 500. http://forums.atvconnection.com/pola...d-cam-pic.html OR could even be a belt or clutch problem, usually the rear clutch if the ramp button were worn down. This can cause speed limiting problems also.
Plus since you just bought it you need a manual! Here's a free one that you can keep on your computer. Can help in many ways on mechanical, electrical, other problems. Hope you can get out cheap on the repairs that may be needed. Index of /ORV Manuals/Polaris/1996-1998 - All Models

Hardly any 425 or 500 Polaris engine will run right without an air filter.Runs too lean. Hope that's all your problem is if you've been running it that way.. Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Honda, Arctic Cat & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
