If you ever find out what that is you'll have to tell me. Sorry I can't help you with the problem, but I can tell you I know the exact sound you are talking about. I've never had my quad do it, but I have heard some of my friends do it before. We never could figure out exactly what the sound was, but figured since more than one quad would make the sound it wasn't to bad. These would be quads of different makes and models, so it wouldn't be specific to a certain 4-wheeler.

its your starter! My 86 trx250 did this.

And it eventually ripped the teeth off my starter gear.

Its like its no disengaging and it kicks backwards

well i just bought a 01 honda recon so i hope it don't do it for a long time, but before it i bought a 78 honda 200 three wheeler and it does it, it like spins for a little bit, and i guess it finally slows down enough that it locks up, but it don't sound good, by the way (just curious) how much does a starter cost? and if u still have u recon under warranty they'll prob. fix it cause that wouldn't be your fault, mine is under a four year warranty (wise choice i think on my part, hell it only cost 500 dollars more, and if something did **** up on it, one trip would prob. cost that much)but anyways just lettin u know i know how it sounds too, aweful

hope u get it fixed and if u find out for sure let us know

i think its the flywheel thinngy spinning, cause my three wheeler had a hole on the top and it was still spinning, so it prob. would catch when u put it in gear and stopped it
but i'm not for sure hehe
