96 scrambler 400 driven clutch bolt question
#1
hi, the washer on the bolt that holds the driven clutch in place has broken and bent on my 96 scrambler. notice the shape of it. can i just replace it with a flat thick washer?
i was unable to get the correct tourque on the bolt which made the bike "skip" under hard acceleration. thanks for any insight.

grade 5 5/16" bolt, 15 ft-lbs. but if was torqued to 10 i'm not certain it would make the belt slip or anything. was it coming loose.
but anyway yes you have wrecked it.
I would have to take apart a quad to decide on the replacement options.
OPT might have a thought about it.

I agree the washer's wrecked.I'd order the correct one. Torque as mentioned is from 15-17 foot pounds, looks like either too much could have caused this or even too loose could cause the clutch to slam outward from centrifugal force on the transmission shaft. As far as the belt slipping I'd tear the clutch down and check for ramp button and helix for damage.

i agree, its toast. when i took it apart the bolt was very loose. on the last ride power was not getting to the wheels, instead i heard a snapping sound (like a chain skipping on a worn out sprocket). i could tell the sound was coming from the clutch area, which is why i took it apart to investigate. hopefully with a new washer and correct torque it'll be alright. thanks for the help

after closer inspection i found out that the sound that resembles a chain skipping on a worn out sprocket was actually caused by........a worn out sprocket
doh! oh well the clutch needed tightening anyways.
feel like an idiot

At times we all overlook the obvious and try to make something out to be harder than what it really is.Just like the old saying you can't see the forest for all the blamed trees in the way.
