Default 2004 Ranger

I have a cold start problem with my 500 Ranger. When you crank the engine over it does not start until you just start to let off the key. After it starts and runs for a few minutes it starts as it should.I tested the coil and it met all specs.I tested the trigger coil and its showing a 180 ohms resistance.I have a 2003 manual and it said it should be 97ohms.I have a 2004 sportsman manual and it says that the late model 500,s should read a 190 ohms.I,m not sure if I,m in spec or not.Any assistance would be appreciated. Also the previous owner put a Procom CDI in the machine.

Think this must be a misprint or you're looking at the stator trigger coil specs The pulse(pick up coil) on all the 500 engines, even the later models Sportsman 500 engines that the Ranger shares, shows to be 97 ohms.I'd pull the stator cover and check for any dirt/mud around the face of the pick up coil, soldered wires coming loose, and also clean around the flywheel. You can even LIGHTLY tap the pick up coil bracket inward a tad to reduce the clearance between the pick up coil to the flywheel. May help on starting. If you have a pick up coil that needs to be replaced, you can get them here.Ricky Stator or check ebay. Plus could be the Pro com cdi. Here's just one site on problems people have had with them.Several more if you just google Pro com cdi problems.PROCOM HIGH PERFORMANCE CDI IGNITION [Archive] - ATV Riders Forum

Today I pulled the stator cover and it looked like brand new in there.I checked and reset the gap on the pulse coil.I checked all the wiring and everything looked good I reran the pulse coil test and it is showing 183 ohms resistance. It is still starting the same way when cold.It fires as you let off on the key.I also put a new ignition switch in.

Did find later a later 2008,2009 Sportsman 500 and Scrambler 500 that did show 185 ohms on the pick up coil that have the dci ignition systems and not magneto triggered like the older ones. If it at least starts, then I'd still suspect the Procom cdi as that's the major complaint that many had with this cdi . Some were from Yamaha forums, some from Razr forums, plus the one I listed earlier.Complaint was hard starting, would crank back up ok after it was warm. Let it sit awhile and back to the same hard starting. Just my I'd be looking for a stock cdi for your model. Item #16. http://www.cyclepartswarehouse.com/f...2004&fveh=6652 Plus you can check out ebay on this part#3089238
This cdi used on many applications.

Do you recommend changing the pulse coil also?

Pickup would be a lot cheaper than the cdi and can eliminate if it's the problem or the cdi. Cheap on ebay.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-1999-2004-2005-2006-Ranger-500-2X4-4X4-6X6-Pickup-Coil-Pulser-/141266022417?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20e41c7011&vxp=mtr

I got the parts over the weekend.I replaced the the pulse coil first and the problem was still there.I bought a used CDI off E-bay and that seemed to cure the problem. Thanks for the help.

Doesn't happen often, but cdis can go out. Seems by now that they would have a good test on cdi modules rather than "replace with a known good one" when testing as many manuals say. Glad you found the problem. Plus this is another example on the Procom cdis that if you research many have had problems with.
