K&N air filters for SP 500?
#1
I'd imagine this has been beat to death but, I thought I'd ask anyway.
How many of you are running K&N's on your quads? and how do you like them. I seen them in non-ATV applications when they let the dirt/fine dust through. Not a pretty sight. How do they hold up in these quads?
thanks

I put one in the day I bought my sp500, and have used it since. The only benefit I think is that the filters get really dirty and you can clean the k&n. I clean mine after about three long rides. I really did not feel any performance difference though. I would use one just for the savings of buying new paper filters.

I have in my Scrambler, and love it. After installing it, I got a little (just enough to notice) more low end, but the motor seemed the run smoother and rev better. The main reason I bought it was so I could clean it when it got dirty. I never re-jetted either.
After seeing how well mine worked, we put one in our Sportsman and our friend put one in his Sportsman before he left the dealer. First ride he sink it, and when we pulled the filter we saw what we though was water in the air boot (air box was full of water, and filter was wet) but it turned out to be gas. And the oil was still good. NO WATER got past the K&N, I was surprised.
He is also running the Polaris pre-filter that comes with the stock filter, but I don't. I am going to buy a Outerwear water/dust proof pre filter.

JeremyB,
I've used K&N filters extensively in my motorcycles and I run them in my quads too. I've never seen one pass any dirt. Not even the super fine red clay we ride in down in North Carolina. If you were passing dirt you must have been sucking air from somewhere. I did have a loose boot on my Scrambler 400 that let it suck air (and debris) in past the filter. As long as the K&N is oiled properly it has proven just as effective as the UNI and Twin Air filters I've used.
Scott.

Installed a K&N with an Outerwears prefilter on 98 SP500. Did not rejet carb because it runs great with just the new filter. I think its a big improvement over the paper filter and you actually hear more air flowing into the airbox. Keep it clean and its should save a few $$.

I'm running a K&N on my Scrambler 500 and LOVE it... The paper ones really don't respond well to water.
We run K&N filters on everything I can find one for... Two quads, a motorcycle, a three wheeler, two trucks, and my girlfriends Dodge Stratus..
I have bought spares for the quads.. that way if we're at a mudrun and trash up a filter, I don't have to worry about cleaning and re-oiling it. I just pull a spare out of the ziplock storage bag and we're back to running.

Thanks!
Sburdman, The filters wern't passing air, they we sealed and very well oiled.
K&N's IMHO don't hold up well in Turboed applications, in these diesel pickups you have a turbo pulling at that filer at 20-30psi or more, I just pulls the dirt right through it. I figure on a Carb, it would be OK just thought I'd check first though.
thanks again to everyone.

JeremyB,
This weekend after we finished riding I took a clean paper towel and wiped the bell of my Carb and there was some red color to it. Looks like I stand corrected. Some extremely fine particles are getting by, I just never noticed it. Thanks for making me check it closer. I also have a UNI filter and will clean everything up and see if it passes any of this Red Clay.
