Default First Quad

Hello, I am looking at buying my first ATV. I will be riding it in ohio, mostly open fields, but also in some woods. I have been looking at other first time buying posts and they all seem to be a bit smaller than me. I am 6'3" 225 lbs, I don't know if it really will make any difference. I have a budget of up to $3000, I would like to keep it more by the $2500 mark. Any help you could give, I would greatly appreciate it.

What type of machine are you looking for. $2500 opens a lot of doors in the sport quad world. Options are more limited if you want a larger 4x4, but deals are out there.

If you expect to be riding where there are large rocks on hills, or deep mud/snow, you may want a 4x4. Also, they are great for plowing snow too. Let us know what the conditions of the trails you'll be riding.

At 225lbs and 6,3 you may want a full size chassis. No sport ATV comes in full chassis I think just mid chassis at most.

Its not about motor size when talking chassis size , example a 450 Grizzly is a mid chassis like a 350 Grizzly/Bruin http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...e2=61363&go=Go Not full size like a 550 or 700 Grizzly.

but a 450 King Quad is a full size chassis like a 750 King Quad. http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...e2=88108&go=Go

Just like a 400 Sportsman is physically the same size as a 700 Sportsman. 2004 Polaris Sportsman 400 ATVs

Same goes with Arctic cat 400 and 650 2004 Arctic Cat 400 4x4 ATVs.

Just sit on them and you will find something you feel right on.

Here is a 400 Sportsman vs a 800 Sportsman http://www.atvreviewnetwork.com/enth...2=199405&go=Go same machine really.

The trails are easy trails. Just a bit muddy and some small fallen trees. I have been thinking more and more about going with 4x4 for when I end up taking it to a friends place to ride his trails. I found a grizzly 660 that I am going to be looking at this weekend, with 290 hours on it. Is there anything in particular that I should keep and extra keen eye out for when looking at it? I am going to be checking the wheels, make sure no bearings are going bad. A friend of mine who has more experience with this than I do is going to go with me, but if there is anything else anyone can think of that I should keep an eye out for. Thank you all for the help, I really appreciate it and will post pics once I find one. I also upped the amount that I am willing to spend to $5000. When I decided on the 4x4, I knew I was going to have to bump it up so I knew I wasn't going to be fixing the entire quad.

Grizzly 660 is a great choice. Make sure it starts easily and idles well. And that the 4x4 engages.

Thank you very much. I was told that I should check the headers right away, make sure the guy hasn't had the thing running the entire time.

Obivously make sure its not dripping any oil or smoking. Most of the stuff apples to any quad. Its stuff that I would look for if I'm buying a quad. Depends on the price too. If its on the low end of pricing, might be able to overlook a few imperfections. If they're asking a bit more, the condition should reflect it.

They are asking $4500 for it, and I figure I will look at it like I would a car. But, like I said, my first quad, and I know they are a little different than cars.

Yamaha Grizzly 660

It seems that its in good condition from the picture, but if you see anything in the description that would set off some flags to keep an eye on, I would appreciate the heads up.

Looks good and that's low miles for a Grizzly. Price is a little high for a 2005 but it is in better condition than most. There's a 2005 for $3000 near here but it doesn't look nearly as nice as that one. http://carbondale.craigslist.org/snw/4979089271.html. The nicer ones are close in price to the one you were looking at.
