2008 Sportsman 500 H.O. - chirping noise

Default 2008 Sportsman 500 H.O. - chirping noise

I just bought a used sportsman (62 hrs/ 350 mls) never been abused etc. When the quad is started and the throttle is pressed there is a slight chirping/squealing which sounds like its coming from the front end below the fuel tank area (just a guess while I was sitting on it). The noise goes away after a certain RPM range so I wasn't sure if it was the belt on the torque converter or what, I don't know much about Polaris and what's sounds are typical for them. It isn't a terrible noise, fairly tolerable but if your particular like myself I would prefer it not make the noise. Anyone have any experience with this or any ideas on what it could be?

Just might be the starter bendix hanging up after it cranks. Common problem on the 500. Out of habit I always "blipped" the throttle on the 500 right as it cranked as this added torque can kick the starter bendix back away from the flywheel. This may or may not be the problem you're having,but give it a try. So assuming it is the issue you described above, if you hit the throttle right when you started it did it go away completely? This sound is constant within a certain throttle range while the atv is operating. Usually right when the atv starts moving, once you hit say 10 mph or if you let off the throttle the sound goes away until the throttle is reapplied.

The sound I was talking about was more of a grinding gear type noise where the bendix would hang up on the flywheel. Yours might be in the clutches.One thing you can do is to remove the cover,get in an open area and use an air gun to blow out any accumulated belt dust and see if that helps on the noise.Dirt and dust can cause clutches to stick or not operate properly. Plus you can be able to check the sides of the belt for any glazed/worn spots that could be causing problems. Plus look at the one way bearing in the drive clutch if vespel washers are worn they can cause problems. The one way should turn freely clock wise. Ok thanks, I will try that. Its def. not a grinding sound. Hopefully its a simple to remove the clutch cover.
