Default 2010 Sportsman 500HO Won't Start

Howdy all I am new to this stuff so please bear with me. I am working on a 2010 Sportsman 500HO. It has less than 10 Hours, 32 miles on it and has sat up for about 2 yrs. Pulled the carb and it was gunked up so cleaned it out, found the small brass tube broken at one end so I pushed it back down and sealed it back in place. Put it back on and the guy it belongs to replaced the fuel lines, pump and filter. Before doing all this, it would start if you sprayed Starting Fluid in the Carb, now it gets up to between 390 and 490 on the rpm, backfires a bit but will not complete the start cycle. I am at a loss, I have Fuel, Fire, Compression just no run. I pulled the plug and pressurized the cylinder looking for leaks, also pressurized the exhaust looking for leaks and had none.

Just cleaning a carb that's been sitting for two years may not work. I'd at least replace the needle and seat or just get a carb kit.Polaris Sportsman 500 2010 2011 Carburetor Rebuild Kit Carb 3131707 R509 | eBay Here's the fuel section from the manual on this BST40 carb.https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...U2gGlaHJWSIlbA Plus float setting is critical onthis model. Here's a good example of this carb used on a KTM and how to set the float level. The BST-40 Bible | Adventure Rider Shame to have only 10 hrs on a machine and let it sit. Hurts them way more sitting than riding them..

Mine sits for 5 months in the winter but I start it up once every 6 weeks atleast and let it idle for 10 minutes , its has worked for the last 7 years.

Thanks, I will pull it off again and kit it. Is the small brass plug on the outside of the carb a type of welch plug covering the mixture screw? I cant seem to find anyplace to deal with the mixture and didn't want to break anything because of my stupidity!!

Just a block off plug for the preset slow idle mixture screw.Replacing the needle and seat, setting the float level and making sure everything is clean and open should help. If you wish to replace this screw set and o-rings you can carefully drill through the plug, use a drywall screw and carefully pry the plug out. The mixture screw is underneath with the small washer and o ring. Just remember how many turns out the screw is. Plus keeping the battery on a tender and having stabilizer in the fuel is important if it sits.

Ok, Thanks, I was considering removing it to clean that area too. Have the battery on tender now as I have read so many posts on how important a full battery is to the whole starting session for these Electronic nightmares!!

A 2010 500 Sportsman should is a carb machine. I rode mine for a month with a dead battery by just using the pull rope only.

Make sure your ETC switch is not out of adjustment. That can make some people pull their hair out if they do not know about it.

Did ya' add the pull mechanism to your 2010 or did it come with it? Mine didn't come with one yet i've found it handy on my '98. :cowboy:

2009 models were the first ones to have "flywheel covers" instead of full recoils. It was just a blank recoil cover with the guts pulled out and the rope hole blocked off.
