Default 2000 SP 500 Locking in 4 wheel downhill with reverse button

We've gone over this in several threads and it does work. My question is, can a person rig a switch to keep it engaged instead of having to hold it in with your thumb? Sometimes, while going over rough terrain downhill, my thumb lets go and away down the hill I go. I was just thinking if one could rig a switch to flip on/off, it would be sure and stay engaged. Anyone ever try this?

First I've ever head of doing this, but you learn stuff every day.. You can look at this over ride bypass and see if it's what you're after. May or may not be..

Pre 2003 and almost all models that do NOT have the combined override/Speedo function button.

Trace wires from the override button (gray/white & gray/orange) Cut the gray/orange and tape up both ends. Cut the gray/white and tape up the end which goes to the override button. Connect the other end of the gray/white to the red/white (ignition supplied 12v)

Sorry, I got distracted from responding. This is one I was reading on this subject. https://atvconnection.com/forums/pol...-time-4wd.html

After reading it again, I see you're concern is what it will do to the tranny. I've tried throttling, but all it does in my case is sends me farther out of control. There's a good chance I'm missing something too.

If I cut the wires as you mentioned above, what will that result in.

Thanks OPT!!!

This is one of the reasons they came out with automatic decent control that used an internal clutch pack in the front diff to help with a braking effect going down hills along with ebs. Sometimes worked, sometimes more of a pain. Some grind, people have had problems with them and fluid would get dark in a hurry. Just applying a steady throttle(contrary to what the mind thinks) does help "load" up the drive and driven clutches and helps with the natural engine braking of a 4 stroke.Like in the other section you posted in I mentioned the 80 foot embankment at the shop I practiced on with the early two strokes on doing this. Takes a while to get it through your head, but it really works on the old non ebs two strokes that would just free wheel down hills.Ebs does help on the 4 strokes, but still a preloading of the clutches helps along with the natural braking effect of 4 strokes and using the brake also. I showed this to several customers that after practicing on our test site a bit found that it did help, especially on 2 strokes and it helped on 4 strokes. On cutting the wires basically you're just bypassing the reverse over ride. This was started up by people that just didn't want to have to push the over ride button in to get full power in reverse.

Thanks OPT. Really appreciate the help, as always. I'll be practicing tomorrow.
