Nice review on an often under rated and over looked machine. I agree, these will do much of the same work and travel many of the same places that the most powerful big bores can do. Maybe not at the same rate, but it can be done and you will still have some fun getting there.

I learnt that along time ago on out twisty, narrow rough trails. A 800 can't go down a 20mph trail any faster then a 250.

It is neat that they had a separate high/low range. At least they made putting it in reverse easy too unlike Honda and Yamaha semi auto models. Honda's have that little button you have to hit just at the right time when downshifting or it won't work. Yamaha had a lever down by your feet that you had to reach down and pull to go into reverse, which got increasingly harder to pull back the older the machine got. There was a way around the button on the Hondas though, at least on the foot shift models. I remember being able to override the button by putting a small piece of fiberglass on the reverse cable. I remember some guy on ebay that made and sold these. We actually only bought one(it was like 10 bucks) and then copied it and made a few more for all our Honda riding friends. It basically was a small piece of fiberglass with a notch cut into it for the cable to slide in. Apparently once you put this in, either the stretching of the cable or the extra weight of the little piece was enough to activate the reverse button. You only then had to simply downshift from neutral to go into reverse without using the dreaded little red button. I think people also many times put a zip tie over the button to keep it permantly pressed, which did the same. It didn't always seem to work on the ES models though.
