1994 big boss electrical problem cdi?
#1
Help! I have a 1994 bid boss with the 400cc 2 stroke. It has had an occasional miss any time I went past 1/8 throttle opening. After it ran a while it was fine. When it missed I could not kill the motor with the key, it kept running. So I have to choke it out. Now it won't run past 1/8 throttle at all and needs to be choked to kill motor. It does start fine and idle fine. I know the cdi part #3084767 is obsolete are there any alternatives ? Also could it be the speed limiter? Any help would be great since it,s a good old dog otherwise.

Make sure the black wires from the cdi, ignition switch, left control switch, reverse limiter are hooked up to the circuit board located on the left side of the atv under the tank cover. You might ohm out the switch and see if it's at fault along with checking out the left control switch emergency kill switch.Common for this control to have problems over the years. Cdi kill circuit(black wire) can short out also but usually will run if you unplug the black wire, but again the key switch wouldn't be able to kill it. That may be what's happened. Plus I'd go ahead and unplug the black wire from the reverse limiter as they are prone to fail and cause problems. Doing this can give you full power in reverse without having to push the over ride button. No problem on an aftermarket cdi if needed. Several places have them. Here's a couple. Thanks for the quick reply! All the black wires were connected to the circuit board. Ohmed the ignition switch, it was open between the blk and red and also open between the blk and red/white. Disconnected the blk wire to the reverse limiter too. Still misses and won't shut off with either the ignition switch or the override switch. Any other thoughts? Thanks again.

Check the circuit board terminals for any corrosion or faulty solder joints that could cause a bad connection. If it wont kill with the emergency switch then this control could be faulty as it ties in with the key switch.Rare, but the cdi kill circuit could be faulty. You might try running the cdi kill wire to a brown or frame ground and see if kills the spark. If it does then it's either in the control switch or ignition switch.

Thanks again for the quick reply. I'm not too comfortable with tearing into the circuit boards solder connections. The wires and spades all looked good when I was testing things earlier. As I said earlier this problem has gotten worse over the years. Also help me, which wire is the CDI kill wire, I can't tell from the wiring diagram? Thanks again and have a great Thanksgiving!

Again thanks so much for the quick response. As far as the CDI box goes, I kn ow where it is but don't know which color wire is the kill one. The box has seven wires, the brown which is ground, then there's a red, blk, red/white, white/ blue, blk/ red and a white one. I just finished deer hunting and now need to fix it before I put the plow on it for snow season in northern Minnesota. Take care.

Hello Old Polaris Tech. Pulled the blk wire from the cdi box and ran it to ground as you suggested. The engine kept running, so is the cdi bad? If so do you recommend any of the units available? Thanks as always.

If you can I'd try to jump the black wire from the cdi,key switch and left control switch together separate from the circuit board and see if you can kill the engine. Entirely possible the cdi kill circuit could be at fault, but I had so many problems with the left control switches and key switches over the years.IF you feel absolutely certain it's a cdi problem then I'd trust an aftermarket cdi from Ricks above any other..
