Ignition spark plug cable cap resistor questions
#1
Hello everybody, I am looking for some knowledge on ignition systems, spark plugs, caps, cables, resistors.
In case it matters, the atv in question is a chinese TaoTao 110cc 'gy6 clone'.
I want to "upgrade" my ignition setup to get rid of the cheap no name spark plug and spark plug wire/lead cable and metal 90* spark plug cap. Not really for "power" but more for consistency, efficiency.
It seems everybody likes NGK, and I've had good luck with Ngk plugs on my import cars in the past, so I started looking for Ngk spark plugs. Looking for the correct spark plug, I saw some Ngk spark plug caps, and an Ngk "racing" spark plug wire/cable with spark plug cap.
NGK Spark Plug CAP 90* L-Style | DROWsports
NGK Racing Spark Plug Cable Ruckus GY6 Zuma | DROWsports
For the spark plug I found the standard NGK c-7hsa, standard Ngk with resistor cR-7hsa, and Iridium Ngk cR-7hix which I assume has a resistor.
It seems to me that the stock spark plug and spark plug cap do not have resistors in them, and it seems that its ok or good to use a resistor spark plug with the stock spark plug cap/wire.
BUT, is it ok to use a resistor spark plug like the Ngk cR-7hsa or Ngk iridium cR-7hix WITH the Ngk spark plug cap (or Ngk "race" wire/cap) that have built in resistors that I linked above?
Or would I need to use a non resistor spark plug like Ngk c-7hsa with the Ngk cap/Ngk race wire/cap with built in resistors?
Thanks everybody!

They came out with resistor plugs and caps years ago mainly to stop interference between other electrical items such as radios. My "first" car for a little while in 1964 was a 52 Desoto Firedome V8.. You could hear the electrical whine through the am radio...
Wont hurt one way or another to use the Ngk cap and resistor plugs.

Cool, I understand what resistor spark plugs do and why people use them, just wasnt sure if I could use a spark plug with built in resistor AND spark plug cap with built in resistor. Was kind of worried having 2 resistors would mess something up.
Anyone else have opinions on this? Use a spark plug with resistor and spark plug cap without resistor? Use a spark plug without resistor and a spark plug cap with resistor? Or use the Ngk spark plug with resistor along WITH the Ngk spark plug cap with resistor?

You're over thinking the whole point... It's ok no matter which way you go.. Most Ngk caps already have a resistor built in,so do a lot of plugs now days if they have the prefix "R" its description,BUT you don't have to use a resistor plug if you don't want to,wont hurt a thing. Same way on Polaris engines. Resistor caps and resistor plugs both together. Even the youth model 50s and 90s are the same way in Polaris and so are a lot of imports. Maybe some of the Chinese manufacturers are still living in the past, but doesn't mean you have to..

Well, after some more digging and reading, Ive seen a few people say that it is bad to run both a spark plug with resister (NGK cR7hsa and cR7hix) and spark plug cap with resister (Ngk cap and Ngk racing spark plug wire/cap).

So according to this thread, and a few other posts Ive seen, I should not use the Ngk iridium cR7hix or Ngk standard resistor cR7hsa spark plug if using the Ngk cap with resistor or Ngk spark plug cable/cap with resistor built in, OR I could run the standard non resistor Ngk c7hix spark plug with the Ngk cap/Ngk wire/cap with built in resistors, or try to find a non resistor Ngk iridium plug.
Is this correct? Or wrong?
Anyone other comments on this?

Not a fan of iridium plugs either, but as far as the comments on running BOTH resistor plugs and caps, bunch of BS.. You can run it either way,non resistor plugs with resistor cap or resistor plugs and caps.. Again resistor plugs and caps mainly both came out to eliminate interference between ignition systems and other electronics such as delicate solid state ignition components, car radios or even early television reception could be affected if a car passed by close enough to interfere with "rabbit ears" or roof top antennas..
