I screwed up...my shift shaft broke on my ATV. It has the rare 5 speed manual transmission. I took it apart and left it for a month then couldn't exactly remember how it went back together. I pretty much figured it out but can't remember how tight the bolts were that compressed the 4 springs on what I think is the clutch. When I tighten them down it seems like the springs have no purpose because they are fully compressed. I'm not sure if I should loosen them a little but am afraid they will vibrate loose if I do that. Does anyone know how tight I am supposed to torque these bolts? Do I use Loctite?

 

You didn't mention what year model,but no big deal as all were the same just different graphics. Best thing is a 5 buck manual that has the torque specs and much more that you may need.2002 Polaris Xpedition 325 Service Manual PDF Download If it's jut the clutch bolts,around 12 foot pounds and yes blue loctite. Get the cheap manual though as it shows the clutches in detail. Plus I can and have been wrong on torque specs off the top of my head.. That's why they make manuals so you don't have to remember..

 

Mine is a 2000 xpedition 325. I bought a $5 manual already but it covered several different Polaris models and had nothing about the 5 speed transmission in it. If it is supposed to be 11 or 12 pounds I think that will compress the springs all the way. Is that ok?

 

im not familiar with polaris 5 speeds but if youre talking about what i think youre talking about, the springs should be compressed to keep the clutch plates tight together

Yes this clutch is just like a regular dirt bike clutch. The springs are compressed all the way in,the bolts are snug. Tighten the bolts in a criss cross fashion in a couple stages to even out pressure on the springs and clutch pressure plate.
