Default Transfer case oil problem

I have a 95 kodiak 400 4x4, I am servicing it. I took the cap off the transfer case and oil came running out. I quickly put the cap back on.
Is the motor oil and transfer case oil separate?
Other than the previous owner over filling what else would cause this?
Does the transfer case use the same oil as the engine? atv oil
thanks for the help

Same oil.....for engine and trans...drain it, change it. May have been over filled or it may be diluted from fuel leaking into the crankcase. Check your coolant level as well...I believe thats a liquid cooled engine. Could be coolant in the crankcase. Let us know what the oil looks like when you drain it...does it smell heavily of fuel? Is the oil milky?

It was not milky.
Is the transmission and transfer case all one on this machine?
I drained the engine oil and then opened the plug on the transfer case. Plug right behind the oil filter.
I the engine is air cooled but it does have a oil cooler.

^^^ Ok, I haven't actually seen an air cooled Kodiak, must have been when they first came out and maybe not that many of them around. How about a pic of the machine.

Got me there....I believe it may in fact have a transfer case.. I have never seen nor worked on one of those but I believe it to be very similar to the Big Bear, which I have worked on but only the fuel system. Hopefully someone else will jump in here and provide you some direction, I can't....sorry.

I don't know what it uses.... Have you tried to Google it....or get a manual. Here's a link for a manual and the download is usually $5.....Will pay for itself in just a few minutes.

If it is the same as my big bear, the t case uses engine oil. Fills up when you change your engine oil.
