99 Polaris Xplorer 300 fan question
#1
So I have been riding the little 300 Xplorer around since I rebuilt it and everything runs out good and everything works on the machine. The one thing I notice is the fan runs an awful lot on this machine. Mostly when I am riding slower and it seems to come on within 20 minutes of riding. Is this normal? The machine doesn't seem hot, in fact, it probably runs cooler than my other machines. All the other two strokes I have normally only have the fan come on after a long ride and it has to be fairly warm out. None ever get hot enough to feel like it is abnormal. The 300 is my only air cooled motor and the other two strokes are liquid cooled so I am not used to the fan being on a lot more. Maybe I am being paranoid and its nothing because this thing runs like a top.
Thanks,
Mike

Probably that cheap little fan sensor on the top motor mount has shorted out/wires touching. I've had plenty of these crack from vibration. Really not worth replacing this high dollar sensor. I'd take the two wires and run a toggle switch to kick it on only under loads or constant slow riding. Most air cooled machines don't have or even need a fan. Always thought it strange that Polaris put one on the 300 as the 250 doesn't have or need one.

The fan doesnt run all the time, more that I think it kicks on while the motor is still pretty cool. It will stay on while I do slow speed riding but will shut off when Im driving for longer, faster bursts. This is my first air cooled two stroke so maybe I am just paranoid that its abnormal. I know its not running hot because it doesnt feel hot.

Wouldn't worry about it.. Most of the ones that came in for fan problems were for cracked sensors that could kick the fan on for longer intervals than necessary or for fans that were running constantly. If you look at this little sensor you can see how cheap it is. Most of the customers when I showed it to them decided to run toggle switches also. Plus if the sensor is working right, because the sensor is on the motor mount bracket and not the engine itself, the fan rarely ever kicked on unless super hot. Same thing on the fans for the Trail Boss 325. Some people never even heard their fans kick on these little oil cooled machines.
