Default 87 Polaris Cyclone 250x problems

I recently picked up a cyclone for free and have been having some trouble. The guy I got it from said it hadn't been run in about 5 years. When I first got it I cleaned the carb, drianed all old fluids, replaced the gas filter/line, added new fluids. The atv started after some trouble and then died, figured that would happen. I tried and tried again and after some time the carb had flooded. OK cleaned and tried again... expect this time instantly flooded. So I bought a rebuild kit and installed all the new parts. Here we go again! Finally adjusted the air/fuel to where I could get it to start and stay running, hop on it, gave it a spin around the block. As I'm coming back to my driveway I notice that when I throttle it's not giving me any RPM's and slowly the engine dies. It was impossible to start after that. I left it with my buddy and he got it back started and idled for ~15 mins and died. He informed me that it had flooded while idling. This is the point I am at now, confused and not sure what to do.

P.S. this thing is a pull start and is very frustrating to troubleshoot lol

Compression test next.. If compression is at a 100psi or less, time to rebuild it. It has to have good top end compression(piston and rings) along with good bottom end compression(crank seals) for a 2 stroke to even think about running right.

Well I found out that it has fine compression, and I have gotten it up and running. I have a new problem that I am afraid will make me get rid of it. While idling you can hear the piston clanking against the top of the chamber. Anytime you're on the throttle it seems to be just fine, but if you let go... clank clank clank clank. Anyone have an idea on what it would cost to repair/difficulty?

Think a lot of what you're hearing is what I always called back wash when you let off the throttle and you can hear this popping, tinny noise through the exhaust.Somewhat normal noise on an old piston port 2 stroke engine as the engine still pulls in some fuel with the throttle closed coming off high rpms and it ignites, with some excess fuel igniting possibly in the head pipe. If compression is good,if it cranks easy now, idles good, accelerates good,no bogging or hesitation, then who knows how long it'll last.If in doubt throw a new piston in it. Of course I'm 67 years old and my hearing isn't what it used to be either.. Simple to tear the top end off, have the cylinder measured for the over sized piston needed, plus you can check for any up and down play on the rod or noisy crank bearings when you roll the rod around.http://www.ebay.com/itm/1987-POLARIS...hT9Ce~&vxp=mtr
