Default 01 Polaris Sportsman 500 shifter question

Hi everyone. I purchased a 2001 Polaris Sportsman 500 DUSE off a guy who never did any maintenance to it. So I've been replacing this and that; and among the things to be replaced was the boot to the shifter assembly (or gear selector as I have seen it called) on the right side of the ATV. When I took apart the assembly, it was filled with oily water and had lots of corrosion. I ordered my parts (boot and new springs) and after thorough cleaning of the housing, I found that I forgot where the centering spring goes. I thought it went on top of the metal "centering dowel" or maybe under it but I'm not sure.

I attached an image of the diagram that seems to be floating across the web, showing the area in question and then zooming in on the specific spot that I am talking about (to avoid any confusion). The centering spring is #23 and the metal centering dowel is #9. It's hard to see where #23 is going.

Thanks ahead of time for any help that can be given. I really want to get this thing going and this is one part that is holding me up. Cheers!

Little slot on the right hand side of the shift box for item#23. All this spring does is when you move the shifter over and up for low and let go of the lever, spring pressure pops the shifter back up to a straight position. Plus don't over fill the box with oil. 30 wt,0w40,etc just enough to cover the slides.

Thank you! I will look for that slot when I get home today and post my result. I really appreciate it.
