So I have an idea of what I want but haven't been able to find that specific atv yet. I'm looking for an older four wheeler from the 80's or 90's, 250 size and up, 4 stroke, 4x4 with fully auto transmission (no foot stepping). Thank you to anyone who can help.

 

If you want to go back that far for a fully auto 4x4, the Polaris trailboss was about the only thing there was. None of the others had an auto machine of any kind. By the late 90's, Polaris was still pretty much the only one that had an auto 4x4 but by then you had the Scrambler 500 4x4 and Sportsman 500 4x4.

Polaris Magnum 425 4x4 came out in 95. Sportsman 500 came out in 96,Scrambler 500 came out in 97. All were 4 stokes,cvt transmissions,no shifting. Basic designs lasted well into the mid 2000's. Sportsman 400 4 stroke was available afterwards also.By then other brands had established cvt transmissions also.

The 325 Magnum 4x4 was oil cooled as well as the 2000 Sportsman 335.I wouldn't even consider the 335 as it was under powered and slow.

 

I think the Sportsman 500 would be the best bang for your buck, one like this Polaris 2006 Sportsman. The scrambler 500 is a bit sportier but you dont get independent rear suspension or any racks, this one does have a rear rack though 2004 polaris scrambler 500 4x4. You can get racks for it though. The chain drive with the scrambler really cuts into your ground clearance as well. Yamaha had the Kodiak 400 4x4 auto which dates back to 2000 I believe. Here's an example 2005 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4. You didn't say how much you wanted to spend but all of these are in the $2500 range or less. I just put local examples from my local craigslist on here, im sure there are similar ones close to you.

 

For the price, I think the ones greg74 posted would be a better buy than a much older model.

Even if what you first considered was less (even a lot less) a model that old will probably need something. If you're looking to buy and ride, not buy and rebuild, a newer one would be a better choice.

 

My budget is pretty limited. I think the Polaris Magnum 325 matches up pretty well with what I'm looking for. Thank you to everybody for the help.
